The gulf between class bowling and Australia bowling in this summer's Ashes series was again highlighted on day four of the fifth Test as England's pace trio embarrassed the hosts at the SCG. After compiling 644 - the largest innings by an England team in this country - James Anderson, Tim Bresnan and Chris Tremlett went to work on Michael Clarke's men with a master class of swing bowling. When asked by Martin Smith on The Last Word why England had twice made Australia look foolish on what appeared a good Sydney batting wicket, Waugh replied: "It's really simple - they get the seam straight, our bowlers don't. "It's a simple method of bowling, but for some reason our bowlers cannot stand the seam up. "I just don't understand it. I could go in the nets now and bowl and get the seam straight." Australia have lost their past two away Ashes series by a scoreline of 2-1, with reverse swing being touted as England's major weapon on each occasion. However, this summer England have made the hosts look feeble on their home wickets, and yet Australia look no closer to matching the Old Enemy with their most potent weapon - fast, reverse swing. Waugh suggested Australia's best exponent of reverse swing wasn't even in the frontline attack, singling out all-rounder Shane Watson as the best of a bad bunch. "Shane Watson is our best bowler. He's the only one that can swing the ball reverse consistently," he said. "Mitchell Johnson obviously can't do that with the way that he bowls. "Hilfenhaus bowls with the ball on a very sharp angle. "Siddle is not too bad. But Shane Watson is about the only one who gets it to stand up straight." If England and Waugh can get the seam straight, yet Australia's bowlers continue to hurl the ball down the pitch in such scrambled, thoughtless fashion, one wonders how much longer the national team need to learn from the brutal lessons handed out by the visitors throughout this series. "You've got to learn to do that," said Waugh, delivering a blunt message to Australia's current and future pacemen. "It's basic bowling, to get the seam straight ... and at the moment we just can't do it."

The way mitch tries to brings the ball back is one of the ugliest sight in world cricket. He would literally try to bend his hand to do that.

Not hard sir. Sachin can do. It is the release, seam position that counts. But for some it just doesn't come natural.

Sirji, woh itna hi keh raha hai ki woh seam seedhi rakh sakta hai. "I just don't understand it. I could go in the nets now and bowl and get the seam straight." He is not saying that he is some great bowler or can swing it 5 different ways.

At the international level i have seen him only bowl offies. But it is not that uncommon that some players know how to bowl certain deliveries.

I think his injured because he hasn't been playing for NSW and not for a while either. Having said that, NSW do have Lee, Bollinger, Hauritz and Clark. As well as youngsters like Starc and Hazlewood. But still Bracken was the best ODI bowler in the world not too long ago and couldn't get into the test side because our bowling line up then was fantastic. However now it is not the best and I think it really lacks variety. We need to blood a youngster like a Hazlewood/Starc/Copeland. I realise they are all from NSW but they seem to be the best prospects. Kind of strange how all the young players seem to be NSW. Need a mix. 6 of the top 7 batting line up is NSW and Katich is injured who is also NSW. The only one who isn't is Hussey.

Why can't Australia play Dirk Nannes? It's all known that Dirk has represented two different country teams in the past but he is legally allowed to represent Australia in any case anyways. I think Dirk Nannes would be an ideal choice for the Australians as he has a great seam action and I am sure he can reverse it.
