Kirsten’s contract ends with the February 19-April 2 World Cup in the subcontinent. “Gary’s mind is made up... He’ll soon complete three years as India’s coach and wishes to spend time with his family (wife, two sons). He’s not about to change his mind,” a confidant told The Telegraph on Saturday. The confidant, who didn’t wish to be identified, added: “Of course, Gary has been touched by the appeal... He values the respect shown by every single India player. However, it’s time for him to get back to his family full-time.” In the eyes of the players, though, Kirsten is “indispensable.” According to the confidant, Kirsten’s decision has been “wholly driven” by family reasons. “It has nothing to do with his career... In fact, he hasn’t really explored options... He’ll have to soon enough.” Significantly, Kirsten has neither been sounded out by Cricket South Africa, nor does he intend becoming a full-time coach anywhere. At least not now. In time to come, the Indian Premier League, for one, could attract Kirsten. Kirsten was himself not available for comment.

achilles Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Gary Kirsten's "last" Test for India If the "Telegraph" and the Ten Cricket team is to be believed, this could be Gary Kirsten's last test match for India as coach. Gary has reiterated time and again that he misses his family and would like to move back with them soon. He even went to SA midway through the ODI series with NZ. So it will be difficult to hold him back I guess, once the contract expires. This is possibly the last test in which Gary Kirsten will be guiding the Indian team, which reaffirmed its status as the #1 Test match unit, the best in the world and under his guidance, we have done a great job in the longest format. Lets hope our boys give Gary Kirsten the farewell he deserves.

Sooda Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 ^Well... ignoring the rude interruption of Guru Greg :D The Saffie who could replace him is perhaps Graham Ford who was in the running a while ago, though I am not sure how good he has been with Natal who he is currently with. Also given he turned BCCI down before probably a non starter

Hindustani Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Cricket is played by 11 players and I always felt the role of coach is overhyped, I mean having a coach which can sync with team is great but then these players are supposed to be professionals, I am sure there are plenty of good replacement for GK, best wishes to him though

I exoect BCCI to drag its feet for a while before getting us a new coach. There will be some stop gap arrangement like we had Chandu Borde and Lalchand Rajput for a while after the 2007 WC till the 2008 Australia series in Aus. If possible, can we have Stephen Fleming or Darren Lehman as our next coach please?

Although someone like Fleming would'nt be bad at all.
