gloryof83 Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Well it kind of does. Look at it this way. Pretty much everyone knows that Raina has a problem with the short ball. Now what is needed is not another person (even of the stature of Ganguly) to add to that. What that guy needs is someone who can rectify that issue. Raina, Yuvi, Sharma & co have known since T20 WC 09 that they have issues with the short ball... they have had two years to rectify their issues, what have they done? Now can Ganguly offer some suggestions on how Raina can rectify it? Even if he has some suggestions, will it be credible, given that he himself had issues with the short ball during his career? Ganguly had problems with the short ball... BUT he worked on it and was able to deal with it. What about these guys??
ZodiaC Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Ganguly was way better than Raina in playing the short ball ftr ([ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTtl3w68gdE]playing short pitched stuff[/ame]). Anyways that's besides the point, how does that even matter?
Watson87 Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Ganguly sucked in playing short balls no doubt, but he is 1000 times better than Raina. Ganguly was a great odi player but he had a difficult time playing short balls. He has every right to critique Raina, being an ex captain I respect his opinion but he's still young and in subcontinent pitches during wc he'll dominate every single bowlers, be it south africans or english, raina will dominate this wcup.

But he was better than the most among the current players. No one can make 18000 runs if he continued to struggle. I remember in the last tour of SA which was his epic comeback series he was hit quite few times on the helmet, Still he gutted it out and was our most consistent batsman in that series, Not just that he scored tons in Eng, Aus, SA. When you compare him with VVS, Rahul, SCG may look pale as a Test cricketer. But the names you are comparing him against are once in a generation player.SCG had problems against shortball still he scored tons of runs.
saneindian Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Raina is currently 23 FFS. Thats the age when the likes of Dravid and Dada started their int'l career. What is hurting Raina the most roght now is the low confidence after those test failures. A couple of good knocks and he will be doing well again.
Andy Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 He did fine yesterday IMO, other than that brain fart.
vamos_rafa Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Of all the things Dada was a natural puller of the ball. This is one fact that even Sunil Gavaskar used to point out. Also he always showed better intent than the likes of Raina and Co. The only phase where he really struggled was in 2005. He could not even put bat to ball then but since his comeback he always did well. Even when he made his debut he did well in WI, when they had a pace attack of Walsh,Ambrose and Bishop. So he has all the credentials to comment for sure. And either ways, if people like Atul Wassan can comment then any tom, dick or harry can :winky:
KKR88 Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Gangully is like After tendulkar and gavaskar in indian cricket in terms of overall achivement..and him being the the best captain indian had so far and more importantly main inventor of this new indian cricket team ,he has has every right to say what he said. i would still take those ganguly and tendulkar opening innings, than any shewag gambhir or other tom dick harry opening stand for india.
Fontaine Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 How does it even freaking matter whether Ganguly could play the short ball or not? Does everyone have to be Viv Richards incarnated before he can comment on someone's ability to play the short ball? Does everyone have to be better than Marshall before making a comment on fast bowling? Might as well shut down this forum in that case. Point is he made a valid cricketing observation about Raina's technique against the short ball. Instead of discussing that this thread is full of ad hominem attacks on Ganguly's ability against the short ball, which has absolutely nothing to do with the topic. How many of you can play the short ball better than Ganguly to comment on his ability? It's common practice here to shoot the messenger if you don't like the message. Dhoni recently stated the truth and what was obvious to everyone about Sreesanth getting through his overs in a timely manner and to be in control and pretty much everyone condemned Dhoni for it.

Andy Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 ^ Yeah you are one of the owners of one of these franchises and hence have a birthright to preach. BTW if ganguly was in his 20s or early 30s he would have been opening in ODIs with GOD. And the poster above you is talking about ODI cricket not ipl. Its sad that your moniker is 'srtfanaticsuck' and you cannot difffrentiate between ODI cricket and IPL. Even Sir john can.
pensionplan Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 ^ Yeah you are one of the owners of one of these franchises and hence have a birthright to preach. You do not want that because I would never let Dada anywhere close to my IPL team just as the 10 owners did in the IPL auction recently. BTW if ganguly was in his 20s or early 30s he would have been opening in ODIs with GOD. And the poster above you is talking about ODI cricket not ipl. can. If's and but's. If only wishes were horses. Its sad that your moniker is 'srtfanaticsuck' and you cannot difffrentiate between ODI cricket and IPL. Even Sir john Do not worry about the moniker. The handle flies perfectly well on this forum.

How many of you can play the short ball better than Ganguly to comment on his ability? I agree with you,Ganguly has a right to give his opinion even if he didn't score a single ton against the Saffers. For all his weaknesses against short-ball,he ironically has the best average among the Indians against SOuth Africa(50+) in ODIs,and he has done well against them everywhere.
achilles Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Outsider and Ganeshkumar make good points. I think we should exercise caution when taking digs at Sourav Ganguly. He's earned the right to guide youngsters and make observations on the game.
Andy Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 This Thread has all been about Ganguly So far, Rather Raina (Which should have been). Thanks to The Troll.
Andy Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 You do not want that because I would never let the soon to be Dadaji anywhere close to my IPL team just as the 10 owners did in the IPL auction recently. If's and but's. If only wishes were horses. Do not worry about the moniker. The handle flies perfectly well on this forum. I'll Take a Ganguly in his late 20s and early 30s with 11k Runs Open with Goddy Ahead of Pathetic ODI batsman Sehwag and Gambhir anyday. If there was a Poll, Goddy and Gangu would have won over Gauti and Sehwag anyday. And its not just 'IF', to disagree with that you need to make a Poll and you'll get the results. Oh well, I forgot you never 'Agree' or 'Disagree' all You do is Name Calling, Trolling. Derailing the Topic etc.
The Outsider Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Well it kind of does. Look at it this way. Pretty much everyone knows that Raina has a problem with the short ball. Now what is needed is not another person (even of the stature of Ganguly) to add to that. What that guy needs is someone who can rectify that issue. Ganguly did not go out and conduct a public meeting saying Raina can't play the short ball. Some journalist asked him his opinion on Raina and Sharma, and he gave his opinion. If he had said, 'No comments' or that 'What a wonderful player Raina is against the short ball' that would have been criticized as well, by people who criticize just for the sake of it. Now can Ganguly offer some suggestions on how Raina can rectify it? Even if he has some suggestions, will it be credible, given that he himself had issues with the short ball during his career? Actually, Ganguly might be one of the best people to advise Raina because he had a similar problem and went on to have a superb ODI and very good Test career. Specially, upon his return in 2007 he hardly ever got out to the short ball or dismissals which could be associated with a short ball set up. If we are all supposed to be better than the players before we comment on them, like Andy said, ICF needs to be shutdown. :winky: Exactly my point. There are numerous commentators who did jack all in cricket during their playing days, numerous writers and journalists who were neither good at playing the short ball nor at bowling fast. So, ideally no one should be commenting if what Ganguly is doing is so wrong, by giving just one statement.
achilles Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 The point is, he is an ideal example for someone like Raina, for Dada worked hard on his game and rectified his flaw.

spectre Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 No, he never rectified his flaw. He always sucked with good short pitched stuff till the end of his career. So he is someone who has not worked over his weakness.. The point is' date=' he is an ideal example for someone like Raina, for Dada worked hard on his game and rectified his flaw.[/quote']
