Ranjha Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I am trying to compare the usefulness of Raina vs Kohli. We are very top heavy with Kohli in side and wasting big hitters down the order if they don't get to bat. Like Yuvi showed yesterday, it's easier to score runs if you don't hit in the air and take less risks and just score runs though your strike rate suffers. We already have consolidators at top, we need risk takers starting at 4...If not we will be hardly utilizing them and giving them enough overs to bat to up the ante. Otherwise just play the extra bowler and drop a big hitter from the team ie Yusuf. I might be mad but I think if Yuvi shows form in another match, we should replace Kohli with Raina even though Kohli is in better format but what about the STRIKE RATES? I haven't done a detailed analysis..Is kohlis strike rate comparable to Yuvi, Pathan and Rainas down the order? Justa thought.
Ranjha Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 I know I will get flamed for this thread but oh well lolll I just think if Kohli plays, we should replace Pathan with a extra bowler If Kohli don't play, then replace him with Raina and only keep 4 bowlers.
King Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Honestly this is a no brainer, Kohli has been the top bat in the last one year even better than some of the top guns in the team. Shouldn't such form be honoured? If you thought Yuvi wasn't taking risk yesterday then why did he replace Kohli? Makes no sense to me. Why should Yuvi be ahead of Kohli and for what reason? This is not to say Yuvi is a bad bat, he's terrific when he comes off but we know he hasn't the consistency otherwise he would have been a first choice at all times. There's always selection criteria hanging over his head be it in test matches or ODIs. Some years ago, Sehwag and Gambhir's name was penned down after Yuvi's but that hasn't been the case in the last couple of years and the sole reason is that Yuvi has not been consistent enough or has had far too many fitness problems.
spectre Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I have been saying this and you had a good laugh at it. Now you concede to the same point. You need players to play at their respective positions where they are the best at. Kohli had to fight with Gambhir for No.3 slot. If Kohli has to play he has to be atleast at No.4 and nothing lower than that. 5,6,7 must all be good finishers. India is going to invariably put some good starts and be around 200 around 35 overs everytime. So you want guys who can run hard, score plenty of boundaries and bring in the home runs as well. Dhoni is another guy who has gone tuk-tuk recently. So we are left with what - Yuvraj and Yusuf (from the current XI) Yusuf is very unreliable and is generally not effective when sent for last 5 overs. He is someone who takes sometime to settle down, get his eye in and then go baam-baam. So, I would have Yuvraj @ 5 Raina @ 6 Dhoni @ 7 Yusuf / Kohli @ 4
Ranjha Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 Yuvi is not inconsistent. Yuvi was the most consistent from 2004-2008. He has been injured and out of form and slowly getting in the groove again. We need Yuvraj to spend time in the middle cu he is a game changer. You are not going to change a game in subcontinent scoring 100 off 100 balls. We need powerhitters like Yuvraj, Raina, Yusuf in full form...atleast 2 of these 3. I am a big fan of kohlis but I think he may not be te right player for flat wickets in India and Raina should come in. But if Kohli plays, there is no py of playing Yusuf as he hardly gets a chance and playa bowler instead but this is riskier than the first choice.

Sorry I can't remember a time when last Yuvi played a match winning knock. I can remember plenty of Gambhir, Sehwag, Kohli, Tendulkar, Dhoni and Yusuf's. I won't be surprised if Yuvi made way for Raina. The way Kohli is hitting the ball in the last year or so, if I was Yuvi I'd be worried.
Ranjha Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 Spectre I was only against it because Yuvi and Dhoni are in bad form and we need to consolidate at the top. But I am thinking Yuvi anddhoni will do fine on these flat wickets and we need finishers and power jitters on these flat wickets esp while chasing or even when batting first.

Veeru was dropped from odi side for many years and Yuvi was the consistent match winner for India but anyways yea keep dreaming that...good luck with dropping Yuvi lolllll Veeru came back with a bang..Yuvi is looking good now and is starting to field well too Like they class is permanent...
NareshK Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 India should never consider dropping Yusuf Pathan. I have seen him change the whole game in a few overs because he has the ability to hit sixes. Even if the asking rate is 9, you can still rely on him to bring it down to 6 if he gets going for a few overs. Besides, he can bowl a few overs. Kohli on the other hand, as good as he is, there are grafters and hitters like Gambhir, Yuvraj and Dhoni like him in their line up. So if they are going to pick an extra bowler, it should be in place of Kohli.

You are talking about Yuvi's form from what 4 years ago when Sehwag wasn't in the team? Wake up this is not 1983.. if players are supposed to be picked on past form, Navjot Sidhu would be the best player to pick as he used to smote sixes in the 1987 WC more than anyone else :hysterical:

Pathan is a must but what I was saying that if we insist on playing Kohli then we should drop Pathan cuz we are not using him. But it won't be the correct move. But ideally Kohli should make way for Raina.
Ranjha Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 ^ king Talking of current form. Yuvi scored 58 at a better strike rate tha anyone from both side who scored 50+. His fielding was better than Kohli, Raina and bhajji. Should have got a wicket if not for 3rd umpire fup. He is only going to get better. Dont bring up the 100 against bd now cuz there is a difference between bd and England. And it doesn't matter wht u think cu Dhoni doesn't agree with you-:)
jusarrived Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Yuvi was not trying to consolidate , rather he was struggling to time the ball ... even if he tries to Yuvraj cant play the anchors role , cos its not easy .
Ranjha Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 But how many anchors do we need. Yuvi has perfectly guided many chases when in form. I think tendulkars and gambhir can easily guide the innings. If Kohli plays then what's yusufs role. He is more like a backup in case top order collapse. And he might not come good on that day. Better play a extra bowler than.

I don't see the line up changing much barring a spinner being replaced by another bowler. I don't reckon Raina will be in the scheme of things in this world cup as much.
Ranjha Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 Please post the batting line up you will like to see when the real worldcup starts on march 23 and post the reason why...maybe I am missing something.

Ranjha Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 Also keep in mind I am saying this only because of flat wickets India is producing. If we were playing on good wickets, Kohli is a shoe in but just consolidating on flat wickets is not enough. If Kohli can score a 110-120 strike rate at number 4 then sure play him. If this match was played overseas, I would drop both Yuvi and Raina and in favor of Kohli.
Sachin=GOD Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Dropping Kohli at this stage of the tournament would be the biggest mistake that we could make.
