Should Raina play instead of Kohli to give a part time bowling option ?

Raina used to come in at 3 earlier as well but he never grabbed his chances. In fact Raina was the front runner for the world cup but Kohli forced his selection by his consistent performances. The guy has performed consistently and fully deserves a spot in the lineup.
Totally agree with the Bold. I don't like the forceful selection only because Kohli is in form even if the team doesn't need him. Raina is kind of a player who can hit from the world "GO". I think that is why Dhoni thought it would be more feasible to have him come down the order.

definitely capable of bowling 4 to 5 overs in the middle overs. what are the other options if yusuf and yuvi dont bowl well.???
Wrong to pick a batsman for his bowling. Also, stop over-analyzing bowler's performance based on the B'lore game. The pitch is a batting paradise where even Ireland chased 327. Let's wait and watch before pressing the panic button.

Examples Sanath Afridi I don't think it's about pressing the panic button. I bet a lot of people are frustrated about the sudden inclusion of Kohli over Raina.

Dhoni can say whatever he can and most probably a captain will never say publicly that Player A is far far better than Player B. But we have seen the performances of these 2 players in the recent past and I don't see Kohli just "slightly ahead" of Raina. Kohli is miles in front of Raina at the moment as his recent form and world ranking suggests. Raina is not a bad player but we need a solid player at no. 4 in case we lose 2 early wkts. I am a big fan of Raina and would have opted for Raina even around 6 months back but at the moment there's no way Raina can move ahead of Kohli.
yes we have seen their perfomances in recent past in south african bouncy tracks. raina still can play kohli's role on indian pitches. i want him in the team to give a bowling option. what are the other options if yuvi and yusuf taken to cleaners? raina will come in handy in those situations. the only other option is to ask virat to do the keeping and dhoni to roll his arm over.(jk)

We already have enough players who can hit from the word "GO" - Sehwag, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Pathan. But at the same time you need solid batsmen as well. Let's say India is playing SA or Aus and loses 2 wkts early. Do you have faith in Raina or Yuvraj coming in at crucial no. 4 position to stabilize the innings? I don't at the moment but have full faith in Kohli to lay the platform for our big hitters down the order to capitalize.

All others will take their time to get set including YP. UV takes more time than Kohli to hit is first four now a days and Dhoni is all over the place that he looks out of the context of the game sometimes. :haha: Our batting is too strong and should be last of the worries. Let's talk about our bowling options.

Jayasuriya and Afridi are all-rounders and Raina is not in the same category. Raina will be lucky to even bowl 4-5 years in an innings. Also, don't quite understand when you say " lot of people are frustrated about the sudden inclusion of Kohli over Raina". Why would ppl be frustrated with Kohli's selection. They both were in the team over the last year and more where Kohli clearly out-performed Raina and was selected on merit. It's not as if Kohli's selection was due to politics and he got in simply coz he played for a particular state or zone. He performed and is in the lineup - it's as simple as that.

Our batting has been strong because of the platform laid by Kohli for most of last year. I will not drop my best and most consistent odi batsman at the moment just because Raina can bowl 4-5 overs in an innings. It's not as if Raina has a proven bowling record as well.

You have to realize that Kohli only played those games where Sachin did not play. He was sort of a cover up for Sachin's spot for over two years now. Raina on the other hand has played over 100 matches and had cemented his place. I have no clue about Indian politics or regional biases so no comment on that. Jaya and Afridi both were initially bowlers but then they impressed more with their batting than bowling. I understand that Raina is no where close to impressing with his bowling instead of batting. I just brought it forward in reply to your statement about a batsman being selected for his bowling.

Kohli has rarely played a single hand winning inning yet. It's very hard for me to believe that he is the one team Indian batting line up is banking on. I have often seen him play those "play along" innings. I have seen him make those half centuries while the likes of Sehwag and Gauti are playing the main destroying innings.

Not even in the wildest dreams it is going to happen. Only way Raina can get in is, by resting Yusuf. No other way. At this point Raina is closer to eliminate Yusuf than Kohli.

Why don't you pull them up for your own self?
I did since you haven't backed any of your arguments with facts... These are the stats for Indian batting from Jan 1 2010 till now and it clearly shows that Kohli has easily outperformed everyone. What now? Player Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave BF SR 100 50 V Kohli 32 31 5 1296 118 49.84 1500 86.40 4 9 G Gambhir 16 16 2 760 138* 54.28 813 93.48 2 4 SK Raina 29 26 5 742 106 35.33 790 93.92 1 3 MS Dhoni 25 23 4 706 101* 37.15 911 77.49 1 3 V Sehwag 14 14 1 656 175 50.46 576 113.88 2 1 RG Sharma 20 19 1 553 114 30.72 686 80.61 2 1 Yuvraj Singh 22 20 3 498 74 29.29 681 73.12 0 4 YK Pathan 17 13 2 469 123* 42.63 371 126.41 2 1 KD Karthik 16 16 0 455 79 28.43 589 77.24 0 2 SR Tendulkar 6 6 1 383 200* 76.60 351 109.11 2 0 RA Jadeja 21 13 2 334 61* 30.36 428 78.03 0 2 M Vijay 11 11 0 196 33 17.81 317 61.82 0 0 PA Patel 4 4 1 158 56* 52.66 185 85.40 0 2 Harbhajan Singh 13 10 4 76 23* 12.66 107 71.02 0 Z Khan 17 8 0 66 24 8.25 120 55.00 0 0 2 SS Tiwary 3 2 2 49 37* - 56 87.50 0 0 R Ashwin 7 2 0 38 38 19.00 34 111.76 0 0 A Nehra 24 11 4 38 16* 5.42 86 44.18 0 0 P Kumar 14 7 1 37 14 6.16 54 68.51 0 0 So Kohli has scored nearly 1300 runs in the last 32 games with 4 100s and 9 50s at a Strike rate of 87. And he's not the main reason we haven't done well?

4-5 overs is all i want from a part time bowler. raina can do what kohli is doing now with the bat.

Can you back your argument with facts? As the stats I posted in previous post shows that Kohli has averaged nearly 50 whereas Raina has averaged just 35 with just a slightly higher strike rate. Both played the same no. of games and Kohli also scored nearly 500 more runs. It doesn't tell me that "raina can do what kohli is doing now with the bat."
