"Kamran has won lots of matches for Pakistan in the past, he is a very talented cricketer, and I think we are at a stage where we shouldn't panic. There are other players who are not performing -- it's not only Kamran," the skipper said in defence of the struggling stumper whose misses proved costly in the 110-run loss to New Zealand in a group match. "He is a good player and we expect that he will do better."

Waqar Younis loses cool, players face heat It as as if he had been caught bunking classes by the merciless headmaster. Well he had walked really late into class. Ahmed Shehzad, however, had seemed oblivious to the condemnation that awaited him as he sauntered down the steps of the Pakistan dressing-room with his customary swagger. His teammates had already sweated themselves dry in the unwavering heat at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy. And waiting for Shehzad, the promising Under-19 World Cup batsman, who now opens the innings in One-day Internationals, at the bottom of the steps was a fuming coach Waqar Younis. Blonde streaks highlight his hairline and the youngster’s brashness is fast gaining a notorious reputation. The 19-year-old Pakistani opener is an epitome of the present-day young generation cricketer — for whom his appearance is as important as his performance, if not more. But as Shehzad stood, with his arms tied tightly behind his back, listening to his angry coach lashing out at him; it was clear that the much-required reality-check had arrived. He had in fact already got a taste of Younis’s ire earlier in the morning, when he had taken longer than usual to pad up for his batting session in the nets. But having then taken too long to surface from the comforts of the pavilion, there was no mercy in store for Shehzad, who has struggled with the bat so far in the World Cup. “You can do whatever you want to do and I will not take decisions for you. I will not take this from you anymore. This is your last chance. If you want to be part of the team, you will have to be one of the boys,” yelled Younis, before demanding the teenager run an extra five laps as punishment. But as Pakistan went through their first practice session following their humbling loss to New Zealand; Shehzad, however, wasn’t the only one to face Younis’s wrath. The local net bowlers at the Asgiriya Stadium, also got an earful for not turning up on time. Along with Shehzad, the entire team, led by skipper Shahid Afridi, were put through the hard yards as the team looked to regain lost momentum after their World Cup campaign was battered out of shape by a rampaging Ross Taylor on Tuesday. Not surprisingly, it was Kamran Akmal, who hogged the spotlight, following the most abysmal of his many embarrassing showings with the wicket-keeping gloves. Interview requests, and there were many, for him were denied by the team manager, who insisted that, the under-pressure wicketkeeper is left alone. Akmal hardly dropped a ball — astonishingly. He went through many wicket-keeping drills without a hiccup. He also made the most of an opportunity to vent out his frustration in the nets by smashing a few balls. Umar injured Unfortunately, Umar Akmal, who has increasingly been touted to take the gloves from his elder brother, ended up with a bandaged finger on his right-hand after suffering a blow during the fielding session. Though almost all the blame for the loss against the Kiwis fell on the senior Akmal’s shoulders — or hands — the Pakistani bowlers too didn’t make a very good impression, conceding 92 runs in the last four overs. And under the watchful eyes of Younis, Shoaib Akhtar & Co too were put through the grind. While admitting that his bowlers had lost the plot against the manic Taylor, bowling coach Aquib Javed, believed that the chief reason for that had been a drop in their energy levels. “We are trying to create a scenario by making them run after their bowling spell in the nets. This will tire their bodies and mind. We will then ask them to bowl again imagining a death-over situation,” he explained. Abdul Razzaq, Akhtar and Umar Gul pushed their already-tired bodies through a few laps around the ground before steaming into bowl again in the nets. Shehzad’s hardships for the day didn’t end with his coach’s exhortation for better behaviour. Veteran Younis Khan rode piggy-back on top of the teenager and asked him to carry him around the ground.
