Either that or they have values that were beaten into them when they were kids (indoctrinated, in other words). What you're saying sounds like a big empty claim with zero evidence to me. Apples and oranges. We’re talking about matters of the mind, not physiological phenomena. Catching a cold is a physiological phenomenon for which, by and large, a medical explanation can be given (we have at least a basic, if not an advanced understanding our bodies, viruses etc.). The appropriate comparison here would be – why are some people more musically inclined than the others. So a couple of hundred years ago, all of these would have been considered innate in humans since they are fundamentally, matters of the mind: - Witchcraft - Subjugation of women (its a matter of the mind to say that they belong in the kitchen) - Slavery - Black Magic etc, etc Try looking up Daniel Dennett's Breaking the Spell. Even if it only means youtubing it, its worth it.

Guest Gunner Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 I fille dout my UK census forms recently ( they have online option) and for the first time in my life I filled in none. Not because I was a believer before but simply because this is the first time in many years this question has been posed to me. It was rather momentous in certain ways. For me it was fairly easy since I don't believe that there is any being watching all out micro actions etc. It sounds outlandish and foolish. However as ram said earlier 95% of the planet is far too stupid to realise that (Yes f.b.m I agree with Ram). My only hope for eradication of religion is that when the next step in evolution occurs it will bring in an extinction level event which will take care of 90% of the population and will leave us with a more knowledgeable future.

Trust evolution - proven process for billions of years - If religion is not contributing to our survival/health - it will become extinct. In moderation religion does help religious-people to calm their nerves and focus energy on their tasks. Nothing wrong with that.

I am sorry, but have you been watching something popularly known as the ‘news’ lately? For you to come out and say that a vast majority of the people operate on rationale is absolutely stunning for the way its completely disconnected from the truth. There are wars going on based on lies and propaganda. The genetalia of babies get mutilated in the name of God. Babies get thrown off roof-tops. 100s of 1000s of people throng mosques, churches, synagogues and temples, praying to their chosen God. Homosexuals are targeted as being God’s abomination. Abortion doctors are murdered. Astrologers, Sooth-sayers, miracle healers make a hefty living by conning people. Couples get burnt alive because they married outside their religion/caste. The fingers of young girls are chopped off because they attend school. Terrorists target innocent civilians in the name of God. Even funeral processions are not spared of the bombings. I can go on for a thousand years, but I think you do get the point. Look around you dude, just look around for a moment. The amount of ignorance, faith, superstition and belief will simply stagger you. They’re not universal across all civilazations/cultures/times. Religion, however, has been one constant that has endured the test of time.
