Clarke Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Some things i'd like to add to the larger context: - There is nothing bad in eating meat. There's plenty of cruelty in nature, it existed before mankind came into existence and it shall be there as long as life exists on earth. Some of us find it cruel in our own minds, we should leave it there. - Two acts of cruelty do not justify each other. They're completely independent actions and should not be compared. There's always hypocrisy in terms of how we deal with various kinds of living beings. What's protected as a pet in most countries may be a tasty meal in Korea. To each their own. - The thing that should concern us about a meat based diet is it reflects human selfishness. Meat production is very inefficient and requires large amounts of resources (water, fuel, land etc) as an input. Large areas of forest land is cleared for raising livestock, which some scientists suggest can drastically harm our climate. With the growing population (another aspect of human don't care attitude), the demand will continue to grow. Food inflation is at an all time high and it shall continue to get worse. It will not affect you or me as much as the poor who depend on the rich for their food. It was not like this all the while. Nature kept our numbers in check by means of disease & death. The growth of the human race in the last century has been unprecedented and the resulting consumption levels have brought newer threats to our existence. One of the few times i saw Larry King Live was when Stephen Hawking was a guest. He stated, "We are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed & stupidity. We cannot keep looking inward at ourselves on this small & increasingly polluted & overcrowded planet. If we can get through the next few hundred years, we should have spread out into space." In summary, i see the current meat diet as a symptom of human selfishness and not an issue in itself. Bablu, if this gives you some hope .. Churchill said in the 1930s "Fifty years hence, we shall escape the absurdity of growing a whole chicken in order to eat the breast or wing, by growing these parts separately under a suitable medium." Nothing major yet, but maybe that's how your grand kids shall have their bucket of chicken wings.

vaibhav_delhi Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 So you are not committing wrong if you kill someone/something that doesnt feel pain? If you kill a patient of congenital analgesia who cannot feel physical pain, is that not unethical? Well, I can only tell you what I honestly believe: Unlike other animals, God gave us humans the brains to think and God gave us conscience. 99% people do have a choice about what to eat (unless they live in extremely cold areas where veg is not available or if they live in poverty, so they dont have a choice) When I know that plants do not feel pain at all (or not nearly as much pain as the animals), I personally wouldn't want to eat non-veg just for my taste-buds. Those animals are born n raised in the farms only to be brutally slaughtered for your food. Just FYI, there is nothing(in terms of nutrition) that a balanced veg diet doesnt provide which is provided by non-veg. Infact, veg is more healthy in longer terms n you will add years to your life by being a veggie... Obviously the choice is yours.:)
Ram Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Also, most of these peta videos deal with western countries. And I'd like an answer to my previous question: Would you boycott something if you know that slave labour was involved or just say that its the slave owner's fault? I ignored the question on purpose the first time. What sort of question silly guilt transfer is this? What do you expect me to say? That I DON’T care what goes behind the scenes and all that matters to me is I get the cheapest product. Of course I am appalled by such atrocities. BUT, I am not going to be allow someone to hold me accountable for something that I had no role whatsoever in. Trust me, if you we choose to go down this road, I can point to a 1000 things that you could be held accountable as well. Of course, I wont do it because that would be silly.
