Tigerbait Posted April 8, 2011 Author Posted April 8, 2011 Azhar was a pretty weak captain. He may not have gone for his player but he never did anything to stop zonal selections either. Ganguly at least took the selectors head on and made sure players he backed made it to the team irrespective of the region they belonged to. I can't even think of one player/youngster Azhar backed. As for Tendulkar we did see Kambli getting so many chances when Tendulkar was the captain but like Azhar you will find hard to find a single youngster/player Tendulkar backed to the hilt and who repaid the faith. With Ganguly he backed the likes of Harbhajan and Yuvi even though the selectors wanted to drop them and thought these players had attitude problems but Ganguly stuck to his guns and look how things have turned out! Yuvi was backed by SG but I think Sachin has had a huge role to play in his revivial especially in the last few yrs. You can tell SRT believes in his talent and tries to encourage it.
indiafan Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 I haven’t followed the team for last few years due to various commitments, but the last I remember was that when couple of individuals don’t succeed, whole team used to fall apart. Now the batting department is much stronger, fielding is good, and bowling is adequate. We seem to be able to get ourselves out of pickle more than before. I suppose this could be attributed to transfer of responsibility to the whole team, rather than few individuals.
Ultimate_Game Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Yuvi was backed by SG but I think Sachin has had a huge role to play in his revivial especially in the last few yrs. You can tell SRT believes in his talent and tries to encourage it. Backing a youngster and fighting selectors to have him in the team when the youngster has not proven himself is totally different from backing a player who has proven himself and is out of form. Anyone can do latter but true leadership is what Ganguly showed by backing the youngsters.
Raghav_12 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Why don't you understand? Dhoni is not a specialist batsman. He is a wicket Keeper batsman only and he was not a captain. His runs were bonus. How many wicketkeeper batsman had an average of 48 in ODIs. There is no better wicket keeper batsman in India than him. Ganguly's pathetic slow batting was the main reason we couldn't score much against BD. He was not even taking singles. Looks like this statement came from 90's. Nowadays wicketkeeper being a good batsman is a norm not exception. As of now most WK can claim a position in team based on their batting alone. Sangakkara, Haddin, McCullum. I mean even Kakmal can do that. What so special about Dhoni being a WK-Batsman?
Raghav_12 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Dada has been instrumental in our win but I have to say some of his fans are the most vitriolic lot  Was very heart wrenching to see Kapil paaji weep though. Dhoni can get in contention if he has only few more fans like V_D..
Sachin=GOD Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Dhoni can get in contention if he has only few more fans like V_D.. array ek hi kaafi hai :haha:
jhakati Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 ganguly was a great captain for sure and stars like sehwag, zaheer, yuvraj, bhajji etc. all rose up under him, so hail dada :hatsoff:
Vikas Bhatt Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Dhoni was still a young player....Dravid and Ganguly were seasoned vets and along with Tendulkar and Kumble were the leaders of that team. Even in 2003 when we had what I believe was the most talented team in Indian history we still could not make it competitive the 2 times we faced the Aussies. Say what you want about Dhoni but the man is a consummate winner. That team had champion bowlers like McGrath, Gillespie, Lee and Kasparovicz who always got the better of us [except Warne] and together they whitewashed most teams that played them because of that bowling attack alone. That team did not lose a single WC game since 2003. The current Aus attack is the weakest and the team weakest that is losing regularly. Players like Tait, Bracken, Hauritz, Kreza etc. are not even good enough to be chosen in an Aus 'A' side but thats what they have now. The team of now and 2003 cannot be compared just as the current WI side3 can't be compared to Clive Loydd's 2 WC winning champion side with players like Richards, Garner, Holding etc. Huge monumental difference.
Rana Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Agree with the OP, they were magnificent. Had this same world cup been 2 years ago, India would have wont even more convincingly.
Cricket Tragic Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Credit to Kapil and his team. SRT said he started playing because of that win. Sehwag, Dhoni etc started playing because of SRT. So basically, most of the guys in the current team wouldn't be there if we hadn't won in 1983. Give all the 83 members another WC winners medal. Give Vengsarkar an extra medal since he picked Dhoni as captain. Azhar should also be given credit (along with Sidhu's neck) for SRT opening and becoming the greatest ODI player.

Andy Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Some of you seem to completely Ignore the contribution of Past Legends. Well Done, thats why we are Indian Cricket Fans.

I heard that VVS Laxman's case was pushed strongly by Azharuddhin during mid-late 90's!!!!

You are not wrong, But its not just about One WC Win, This win is not a Fluke we are the Best team in the world and the Force has not been made overnight, there has been few people who liad the foundation of the 'Team' India that started from Ganguly Era. Thats what i am talking about. This team was favourite to win the WC, Why? Because of the force we have. No doubt Dhoni and his men deserve most of the credit, But if you remove past legends from the history Of Indian cricket I doubt Dhoni could have had this team in his disposal to win the WC.
Cricket Tragic Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Some of you seem to completely Ignore the contribution of Past Legends. Well Done' date=' thats why we are Indian Cricket Fans.[/quote'] In fact, I see a lot of people trying to take credit away from the current team (especially Dhoni). The guys mentioned (also Kumble) have made incredible contributions over the years. No one has or will forget that. However, this moment belongs to the current 15. The guys in the squad get the medal and the credit.

Past legends count for nothing when you get caught up in the pressure situations in the knock out matches and if you are trying to imply we got players like Yuvi,Zak,Viru and Bhajji under Dada captaincy thats why he should be credited, then sorry I dont buy that arguement .
