Tigerbait Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Obviously, they aren't part of the team but they had such a strong hand in laying the foundation for this success. Dhoni was gracious in mentioning their names but it would be nice to see even more recognition for these guys as they were very much leaders in the Indian cricket rennaisance of the 2000s. While Ganguly instilled the killer instinct that we take for granted today, Dravid actually became one of the best improvisers of the game. He adapted his batting side so well to 1-day cricket and became a single taking machine towards the end. A lot of ex-players had a part to play in getting us here but SG and RD stand out to me.
Legend of Dhoni Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Totally agree. If Dravid and Ganguly didn't lead India to that dreadful showing in the 2007 WC we would never be here right now.
Andy Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Totally agree. If Dravid and Ganguly didn't lead India to that dreadful showing in the 2007 WC we would never be here right now. WTF you are Smoking bro? :woot: Care to dig pout how much 'Legend of Dhoni' scored in that entire WC?
punjabi_khota Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 WTF you are Smoking bro? :woot: Care to dig pout how much 'Legend of Dhoni' scored in that entire WC? BURN!!! :hahaha:
Legend of Dhoni Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 WTF you are Smoking bro? :woot: Care to dig pout how much 'Legend of Dhoni' scored in that entire WC? Dhoni was still a young player....Dravid and Ganguly were seasoned vets and along with Tendulkar and Kumble were the leaders of that team. Even in 2003 when we had what I believe was the most talented team in Indian history we still could not make it competitive the 2 times we faced the Aussies. Say what you want about Dhoni but the man is a consummate winner.
Andy Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Dhoni was still a young player....Dravid and Ganguly were seasoned vets and along with Tendulkar and Kumble were the leaders of that team. Firstly doesnt matter how young or old a player is that much poor showing against teams like Bangladesh, Bermuda leave alone Sri Lanka is not Justified at all when you compare him to what Sourav and Rahul did in their First WC. 2ndly Dont forget apart from WC Final Dhoni has failed in this WC too. Even in 2003 when we had what I believe was the most talented team in Indian history we still could not make it competitive the 2 times we faced the Aussies. Say what you want about Dhoni but the man is a consummate winner. Dinesh Mongia, Kaif enough Said. Now compare that to against a Formidable aussie Side, anyday they were better and deserve to win. Even this Indian team may find difficult to beat that team. Talking about being a Winner, Even Sreeshant can claim that Title, Two finals and two winners Medal.:haha: Lets not get away from the topic by bringing in 2007, The OP is talking about Sourav and Dravid's contribution since 2000 and how they changed the team [Even Dhoni admitted that]. Had not Dravid left his keeping Gloves, Dhoni would have still been selling tickets at Kharagpur Ticket Counter.
Switchblade Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Ganguly was the one who introduced young guns like Yuvi,Bhajji,Viru,Zak and many others in the team and he was the one who made the team aggressive and Dravid was a team man he did everything which was asked of him.

Legend of Dhoni Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 I wasn't being sarcastic in my first post. The 2007 debacle had ALOT to do with our success this year. Somehow I feel a semi-final or Super 8 departure in 2007 would not have motivated the boys like a first round exit did.
punjabi_khota Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 No one is allowed to make fun of Ganguly This.
vpg0002 Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 The humbleness and humility that Dhoni showed even after being the man of the match and playing a crucial role in winning the final show the class of the man. Dhoni went to say that the win is credited to Ganguly, Dravid, Kumble and Tendulkar for the all the services they have to the present Indian cricket team.
Ranjha Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Will give credit to Ganguly no doubt for showing confidence in yuvi, bhajji and zak and for helping indian cricket rise from the match fixing days. Will give credit to dravid only cuz he was commited to India and even kept for us.
vvvslaxman Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 This team is mentally much stronger. They have been playing lots and lots of tough matches and most of the time ended up on the right side. I have to say Gambhir's addition is immense. I am not going to attribute this success to past persons. Dhoni himself pulled us out of troubles so many timess. Raina.. what can i say.. What a player he is. Back in 2007 India could have won even after 4 wickets being down. Dravid is never known for winning ODIs singlehandedly. He is a brilliant player. But never a game breaker. Advantge with this side is each one was capable of accelerating at any stage.
pensionplan Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Will give credit to Ganguly no doubt for showing confidence in yuvi, bhajji and zak and for helping indian cricket rise from the match fixing days. Will give credit to dravid only cuz he was commited to India and even kept for us.And on that token GC deserves credit too for getting in Raina, Dhoni and kicking an unfit Zak out of the team in 2005 that made him meaner and fitter by spending time in the counties. And look how much Raina, Dhoni and Zak contributed in this WC win.
Ramzz Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 I strongly believe that Kirsten's dossier where he asks players to have more sex...either with a partner or going solo played a "bigger hand" in this win. :P
Shane Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 True, Ganguly was the first real leader of this team. Dravid was the ultimate team man, who gave it all and also dont forget the no. of matches he finished coming in at no. 5.
Ultimate_Game Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Yes, Ganguly should get a lot of credit as he was the one who started blooding youngsters and totally did away with the "regional selection", which was the bane of Indian selection, by backing youngsters such as Sehwag, Yuvi, Harbhajan, Zaheer and Kaif which were not from his zone. Plus he also asked Dravid to keep so that we started playing with 7+4 formula as before him we had Mongia batting at 6 0r 7  Dhoni is the one who built on what Ganguly started and gave this team calmness, self belief and mental toughness which was missing. Remember guys we used to lose a lot of finals under Ganguly which was rectified by Dhoni. For me we have been extremely lucky to have such good leaders so close to each other. Dravid IMO wasn't a great captain or leader and took India back a bit after Ganguly. As a player though Dravid's contribution to Indian cricket can never be understated.
rkt.india Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 WTF you are Smoking bro? :woot: Care to dig pout how much 'Legend of Dhoni' scored in that entire WC? Why don't you understand? Dhoni is not a specialist batsman. He is a wicket Keeper batsman only and he was not a captain. His runs were bonus. How many wicketkeeper batsman had an average of 48 in ODIs. There is no better wicket keeper batsman in India than him. Ganguly's pathetic slow batting was the main reason we couldn't score much against BD. He was not even taking singles.
