koksmayu Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 hello cricket lovers, lets start debate on which team is the best comparing 1983 or 2011? or you can say much deserved team to win the world cup comparing team india of 1983 or 2011?
vvvslaxman Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 In 1983 India was outside favorites. In 2011 India was hot favorites.
koksmayu Posted April 20, 2011 Author Posted April 20, 2011 and in 1983 india faced fastest and dangerous bowlers than current fast bowlers with half helmett AND THEY WON IN ENGLAND AT OVERSEAS and kapil dev said current team india is much better than his era of 1983 .............but i dont think so

It is practically impossible to prove that.
veer Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 WI at that time was hot favorite.. and if they had played 5 game series against India.. more than likely WI would have won it.. it was one off game that we won in 1983 against WI.. In 2011, if we play 5 game series against any country, more than likely we will win the series.. that's how I would look at it..

They did straight after the WC in India and smashed us out of sight (5-0).

In 2011, if we play 5 game series against any country, more than likely we will win the series.. that's how I would look at it.. Putting it simply that WI XI was the best XI that ever assembled to play cricket on face of the earth. So the excitement of beating them -- cannot be compared to anything else. India was a good team -- with individual brilliances like Kapil Dev and very very very well supported by the bowlers. India just put all its energy in 2 games Semis and Finals and pulled it off. People tend to forget -- how good England was during that time. Bloody David Gower was batting like a man possessed till he hit the Indian Wall and even that Syed Kirmani had to pull a magic to achieve that. In 2011 -- we were the favorites (if not hot favorites). Anything less would have been disappointing. To some body up here -- who claims we won abroad, NO WC has gone to a Host Nation so far -- and MSD changed it all.
Cricket Tragic Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Didn't we beat WI TWICE during that 1983 WC? Yep. Played them twice in the league stage. We won at OT and lost at the Oval.
vijay810 Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 You are trying to compare somethnig like what was better.......The Mercedes model of 1983 or 2011 .Which is better. Of course both........were fabolous teams.
Captain of Bhangra Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 The 1983 team were underdogs that somehow pulled off the unbelieveable. About 2-3 World class players supported by mediocre individuals that pulled it out of the bag at the right time... The 2011 team were favourites before they faced a ball, and while they may have brought us immense joy, they didn't surprise anyone by doing it. There were weaknesses, but there were about 8-9 World Class players in there... What the 1983 team did for India was bigger than what the 2011 team did, and it changed the face of the game Worldwide, by igniting the craze we see in India in modern times. That said, the 2011 team is unquestionably better than the 1983 team, and would pulverise them 9 times out of 10...
Lurker Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 I personally thought India fielded its best team in 1987 WC. Srikanth and Gavaskar were openers, and Sunny in 1987 was a changed man as compared to 83(or 79 etc). Sidhu and Azhar were 3 and 4 and were both in great form. This was the tourney that started the whole Sixer Sidhu saga. Vengsarkar was at 5. Pandit came in for him in semis. Kapil and Shastri were all-rounders at 6 and 7. More was keeper. Bowling wise we had Prabhakar and Chetan Sharma both of whom could bat, plus Maninder as a spinner. Overall bowling was better than 2011 and 1983, more complete attack. Batting was pretty solid if not formidable. We should have won 1987 WC. Between 83 and 2011 I think 1983 was a more balanced team, 2011 is too batting oriented for my taste. I will go with 1983 on that one. xxx

They couldn't move the ball an inch if the wickets were not helpful and at their pace -- would get clobbered like anything, which is what happened to them later on. Especially compared to the bowling other teams had. At least now-a-days other teams are not far ahead of us in bowling and our batting more than makes up for the little difference

Especially compared to the bowling other teams had. You have to look at it in the context the series was played. 1983 Binni and Madan Lal were amongst the top wicket takers with Kapil chipping in. Barring Kapil's 175 and Srikanth and Yashpal Sharma's batting in semis and finals the tournament was actually won by the bowlers. Whether you think they offered balance, or not, is besides the point. 1983 WC was won on the back of bowling with batsmen chipping in. Thats as good a testament for balance attack as you will get. xx
Ultimate_Game Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Pointless exercise IMO. 1983 and 2011 are poles apart. Back in 1983 odis were almost played like Tests but over a shorter period of time (60 overs) - no power-plays, no bouncer rule, no fielding restrictions, no pinch hitters etc. Now it's almost a different game. As far as technical skills are concerned the 1983 team was ideally suited for English conditions with a bunch of medium pacers/swing bowlers in Madan lal, Balwinder Sandhu, Roger Binny, Mohinder Amarnath backed by Kapil, and the team had batting depth with Kirmani coming in at 10. I think 1983 team would be successful in English/seaming conditions whereas 2011 team is more suited to subcontinental conditions.
Ultimate_Game Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 2007 team :yay: You have a thing for Chappell I see :winky:
Captain of Bhangra Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 The 2003 team was pretty awesome. Maybe as good as the 2011 team, or even better (certainly in the bowling department). They were just unlucky that the Aussie side of that time was an absolute juggernaut...

They were just unlucky that the Aussie side of that time was an absolute juggernaut...[/quote'] Not unlucky... they were stupid enough to field after winning the toss. Batting was our strength that time and on a good batting track we could have put on a good total and anything can happen when a team is chasing.
