The Sri Lankan cricketers playing in the 2011 IPL have been asked to report to Colombo by May 5 to prepare for the tour of England. The squad is due to depart for England on May 10 whereas the IPL goes on until May 28. "For the past two months or so they [the Sri Lankan players] have been playing one-day and T20 cricket and it is time they switched on to playing the longer game," said Duleep Mendis, who replaced Aravinda de Silva as the new chairman of selectors after the World Cup. "The first half of the English summer is not going to be easy and we want the players to report for training and to concentrate on getting used to the change of playing white balls to red." Eleven Sri Lankan cricketers are involved in the IPL, including Tillakaratne Dilshan, who is likely to lead Sri Lanka in England after Kumar Sangakkara resigned after the World Cup. Dilshan plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore along with fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep. Former captains Sangakkara (Deccan Chargers) and Mahela Jayawardene (Kochi Tuskers), Suraj Randiv and Nuwan Kulasekara (Chennai Super Kings), Dilhara Fernando and Lasith Mallinga (Mumbai Indians), Angelo Mathews (Pune Warriors) and Muttiah Muralitharan and Thisara Perera (Kochi Tuskers) are the other Sri Lankan players in IPL. Sri Lanka begin their tour of England on May 14 and play three Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 international.

The all-rounder, 34, will lead the side in all formats, succeeding Kumar Sangakkara, who quit after the World Cup final defeat by India in April. Former captain Marvan Atapattu, 40, has been named batting coach for the tour. But the selectors have postponed naming a replacement for Mahela Jayawardene as vice-captain because a number of prospective candidates are injured. All-rounder Angelo Mathews, 23, has been tipped to take over the role, but he is nursing a side strain suffered during the World Cup semi-final win over New Zealand. Dilshan has led his country once before, during last June's tour of Zimbabwe, when his team won the final of a one-day tri-series which also featured India. The opening batsman was the leading scorer during the World Cup - which Sri Lanka co-hosted along with India and Bangladesh - with 500 runs at an average of 62.50. He also took eight wickets at 15.75 with his right-arm off-spin as his side made it to the final before losing by six wickets to India. His predecessor Sangakkara resigned the captaincy three days after the defeat in Mumbai, citing the need for a younger leader be put in place to guide the side through to the 2015 World Cup. Sangakkara replaced Jayawardene as captain in March 2009, with the latter reverting to vice-captain. However, Jayawardene too quit his role in the aftermath of the recent World Cup, after becoming the first player to score a century in the final and end up on the losing side. The country's four selectors, headed by former national skipper Aravinda de Silva, also resigned after the tournament. Sangakkara had initially offered to stay on as interim Test captain while a successor was found for the shorter formats. Dilshan is also famous for popularising the "Dilscoop" - a scoop over the wicketkeeper's head - at the ICC World Twenty20 in England in 2009, when Sri Lanka were losing finalists and Dilshan was named as player of the tournament.

Not a very impressive choice, I think. Saw him captain the side in a one off T20 game against India, and he was all over the place towards the end. He was shouting at his own players and looked frantic. But then again, Sri Lanka doesnt really have a whole lot of choices. Angelo Mathews, the other contendor, is too inexperieced. Add to that the fact that he is an all rounder, and captaincy will surely put a lot of pressure on him.

Sri Lanka's Dilshan seeks early IPL exit April 25, 2011 AFP Colombo Sri Lanka's new skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan, one of the stars of the Indian Premier League, has said he wants to leave the event early to travel with the national team to England on tour. Dilshan is keen to join the Sri Lankan squad when they fly to England on May 10, which means he would have to abandon his Royal Challengers Bangalore IPL side three weeks before the tournament ends. Sri Lanka are set to play three Tests, five one-dayers and a Twenty20 international during the tour. "Dilshan is keen to travel with the team, to try and create a bond as some of the senior players will be joining the squad a bit late," Dilshan's manager Roshan Abeysinghe said. Sri Lanka Cricket last week allowed its IPL players to stay on in India until May 18, rowing back on a request for them to return by May 5 to prepare for the tour. Dilshan took over as skipper last week after Kumar Sangakkara quit following Sri Lanka’s defeat to India in the World Cup final in Mumbai earlier this month. Dilshan has scored 105 runs from five games for Bengaluru, who have won two of their six matches in the money-spinning Twenty20 tournament so far. .

:hello: Feed iz back :woot: :blush: I think Dilshan is making the right move here. A new captain needs some time to build a team. RCB should let him go and sign some other opener.

Is going to be a very tough series for the Lankans. But if the pitches are bowler friendly tracks likes of Dilhara, Prasad, Kulasekara etc can do some damage. Randiv too will be handy. A lot though will depend on how many the batsmen can score 300+ to give their bowlers something to work with. Dilshan, Mahea and Samarveera will have to stand up and get counted else Sanga , like on all away tours, will be fighting a lone battle. Will be also interesting to see how Swann bowls vs them during the test series. SL and India are going to be the two biggest tests for him since his comeback.

Not really convinced by that - Dilhara has a really poor Test record against non-Bangla opposition, Kula has only done well against the weak Pak batting line-up in Tests and Prasad has done nothing since taking 5 wickets against India on debut three years ago. Even if they did somehow manage to take a few wickets, the English bowlers would still be more effective - as you say, Sanga apart they really aren't a good batting line-up on tough pitches outside Lanka. Best hope for them is for the weather to be sunny and get some flat tracks because their batsmen can flat track bully like few others.
