Stuge Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 why do they keep on changing the format ? why not simple semi final ,final and 3rd and 4th place game .
Mariyam Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 ^^ This is a rather strange set up. The importance is on finishing in the top 2, and not just on topping. And then winning Q1. The team which comes 3rd/4th will have to play 3 games in 3 days if they make it to the final. Not a balanced schedule.

We don't want what happened to DD in IPL 2009.
NareshK Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 They want to give more incentive to teams performing consistently i.e finishing on 1st and 2nd than teams that just sneak in through based on NRR. I dont think its a bad move.
Mariyam Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 They want to give more incentive to teams performing consistently i.e finishing on 1st and 2nd than teams that just sneak in through based on NRR. I dont think its a bad move. That is not a good reason. What if NRR separates 2nd place and 3rd place? In that case, the current set up is unfairly penalizing the 3rd place team for having a low NRR. I gave this some thought. The schedule this time is really erroneous. First of all , all teams don't play each other twice. There are two 'fictional' groups and all teams play 5 teams twice and 4 teams once. It could happen that a certain team got an easier draw and hence a better NRR. So the league stages are also not 100% fair. And moving forward to the knock out stages- 1 vs 2 is on the 24th in Mumbai 3vs 4 on the 25th in Mumbai loser of 1 vs 2 vs winner of 3vs 4 on 27th in Chennai final on 28th in Chennai. So the top two teams at best have to play 2 games on 24th and 25th. The 3rd/4th team in a best case scenario has to play 3 games including a back to back game. Pretty callous schedule.

Yes there should be an advantage of finishing 1st and 2nd. 1st should be made to play against the 4th team. 2nd against the 3rd team. That is fair and advantage enough. Making a team to play an extra game is ludicrous. And playing an extra game will also affect other things like Orange Cap, Purple Cap and Yellow Chaddi. What about that? These players will have a whole extra game? What if Punjab XI finish 4th and Velvet Paul has an extra game over Tendulkar? And because of that he wins Orange Topi. That would be unfair to Tendulkar.
Zap_Brannigan Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Its a long league and fighting for top 2 places is always more exciting than the top 4 places.
