It all based around their new WP7 market. Partnership with Nokia and now Skype is just building the armory for the wp7 market to succeed.

I used to like Google a lot in the past and almost hated M$ to some extent. But after the recent rectifications by Microsoft starting with Windows 7 onwards I am also a fan of Microsoft. BTW I was always a fan of Bill Gates but not of M$ though. :D In terms of browser I dislike both of them and like Firefox instead. However, I was checking the browser stats in one of my sites and I was surprised to see that almost 25%+ of the traffic was using Google Chrome. FF was no.1 at nearly 40%+ followed by IE with 30%+ and Chrome made upto 25%+ whereas browsers like Opera and Safari were just one percent or less. So, it is quite interesting that Chrome seems to have become one of the potent forces in the browser market within such a small period. Skype is a good purchase by Microsoft. Half of the world's big web properties are either getting bought by Microsoft or Google in the last few years and it is quite interesting. There was also speculation last year that Yahoo might be bought by one of these two too. Facebook has been dealing in its own ads and monetization and hence not dependent on the two. Infact Facebook is also making quite a few acquisition recently and is becoming one of the biggest players in the market.

Microsoft had their good period. No matter what they do, they can never compete with google & apple in next generation of gadgets. Like television, PCs will be replaced by smart phones and microsoft will be finished.

After coming out with the disastrous Vista, they redeemed themselves with Windows 7 which has been probably the best OS by Microsoft. The Windows Mobile OS was pathetic but the new WinPho7 is simply superb. Even IE is getting better now. So don't write off Microsoft just yet.

Remember when Sony and Nintendo used to have the lions share of the gaming market? Microsoft managed to catch up and compete neck to neck with Xbox by coming from behind.

Will this merge MSN messenger and Skype? What if someone doesn't want people from MSN messnger ( relatives) to be on Skype ( friends) list? What can one do then?

1. It's foolish to underestimate someone as big as MS. 2. It's foolish to try to predict the tech market. Not even the top three- Google, Apple and MS can say for sure how the market and the products are going to shape. All they do us try to stay a step ahead of the other. Gates is not an idiot. MS might have lost this round, but they have enough power to come back and come back well.

I would assume they won't make that mistake. There is a reason why Skype has done better than MSN. MS will keep them separate I guess.

What many people don't know is that Skype is NOT making profits. While the number of users is huge, only a fraction of users actually pay for using it. It is not worth $8.5 billion. Someone mentioned Yahoo. That was also highly overpriced. Compare the valuation during that period to the value of the company today. It's barely 50%.

The reason Yahoo or Skype are not that successful is because they do not dominate the ad market. Google is so successful is because it is the king or rather emperor of the online ad market. So, any product it launches or takes over automatically has loads of sponsors and so are highly successful. So, it can offer everything for free yet make profit. Even Google has also started to sell quite a few of its products recently or at least bringing pro or paid options too. Microsoft and Apple sells off everything and so are highly successful too. Anything that sells or is sponsored. There was a time when Microsoft even sold hotmail if I remember correctly before gmail came. :giggle: So, the successful companies are going to be the ones which either sell or are sponsored. One more reason is also because the online market or for that reason tech market is becoming more and more competitive day by day. So, with more competition the price automatically decreases a bit. So, the previous valuation cannot be the same today though in this market some also leap ahead as people trust companies like Google, MS and Apple more than smaller ones. And Microsoft has come back extremely strongly in all its products in the last 1-2 years. So, dont count them out. Windows 7 is their fastest selling OS and was selling one copy every 7 seconds till last year. Nowadays people dont use pirated Windows like they used to do 10 years back. So, that is also another benefit. They have launched quality product and can only go ahead now unless they do some massive mistakes like Vista in the future.
