Exactly. WTF Morris Tiwary?? Irfan?? Jadeja? hmm Haven't seen much of Ojha in IPL.
One thing you guys have to keep in mind while selecting players for ODIs is look at players as a talent package, rather than look at things in isolation. Merely as a spinner alone, Jadeja was a far more effective and economical than Amit Mishra was, when they both played together for India. That alone should have gotten him ahead of the queue, but his superior fielding skills (I rate him India’s best ground fielder, with one of the strongest arms in the country), makes him an automatic shoo-in. I have no doubts in my mind that Saurabh Tiwary is the star of the future in ODIs. Along with Kohli, Raina, Rohit, he will make form the nucleus of the Indian ODI middle order, once we move past the Dhoni-Yuvraj era. Plus, he’s also very a good fielder. He should have been there.

Saha is their only as back-up w/keeper, he is unlikely to get games unless parthiv gets injured. Tiwary I think was unlikely last time selected, is he hardly got a game, and when he did he only had a few deliveries to play and remained not out on all occasions.
The last time Tiwary took to the field as a batsmen for India, this happened; http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-new-zealand-2010/engine/match/467886.html What has happened between then and now, for him to be ignored?

:hysterical::hysterical: Dude, Tiwary was struggling to put bat to ball in the innings and hit some boundaries towards the end when Pathan had made sure of an Indian win. It's like going nuts about the supporting knock that Laxman played in Tendulkar's 143 at Sharjah.

OMG I can't believe you think so highly of Saurabh Tiwary, the other Tiwary (Manoj) is a better batsman along with a heap of others. ST is just a slogger
You couldn’t be more mistaken. Don’t let his rustic, countryside batting style to cloud your judgment of his batting skills. Don’t forget, he was one the instrumental reasons in helping go as far the finals during last year’s IPL. And you can tell MI is missing his talents in the middle, given they have been bowled out for under a 100, TWICE this year. He has the same maturity that Raina had, when he came into international cricket – very calm, collected in pressure situation and doesn’t back away from a fight. Plus, he has the power game to step it up whenever he wants to, which is critical for an ODI batsmen of this day and age.

WTF? Struggling to put bat to ball? You joking right? Either that, or you obviously did not see the game. He played the perfect 2nd fiddle role – Knocked around during the initial part of his innings when Yusuf was blazing away and towards the end, when had Yusuf had crossed his 100 and wanted to remain unbeaten, he stepped up the pace the closed out the game.

Nope, I am dead serious. Prgahyan Ojha was far and away, the most economical Indian bowler during 2009-2010 time-period, when all the other Indian bowlers were spanked to all parts of the ground in successive home ODI series on some REALLY flat pitches. If you’re picking an Indian squad with 3 spinner, he’s an automatic pick for the 3rd spinner spot, ahead of Bhajji and Aswhin. However, if his physical conditioning (he’s far and away, the Indian cricketer in the worst shape, IMO), then the next automatic choice should be Jadeja. Jadeja fell out of favor because his batting failed to meet expectations, but he was already the 2nd most economical Indian bowler, behind Ojha, in the same time frame. Plus, he’s a stunning fielder to boot, with safe pair of hands and a rocket arm. If that isn’t good enough, then his batting has shown signs of revival in the recent IPL. Why would you pick Amit Mishra, who was an unqualified failure during the time he was tried for India in ODIs, over both of these players, I have no idea. Vinay Kumar’s another curious case. He rose to prominence during the 2009-2010 Ranji season and some good performance in last year’s IPL. But IMO, his bowling is at best average. For you to be a successful ODI bowler, you forte must be skill first (pace, bounce, movement, line and length control) and then come the variations. But is somebody who relies ENTIRELY on variations alone, which is a huge risk. And as a batsmen, once you figure him out, then he’s easy pickings, as Cameron White showed when he walloped him all over the stadium, during the home ODI series before the WC. And why in the world has Saurabh Tiwary not been picked? The last time he was in the crease for India, he shared an unbeaten 100 run partnership with Yusuf Pathan to guide the team home in a chase of 315, after we were 180/4. What wrong has he done since then? The guy has already showed the he’s easily among the top 5 most promising batsmen for India in ODIs and he has been ignored? Even if you argue that Saha has been picked as the backup keeper, then Tiwary should have been picked ahead of Badrinath. I love my man Badri, but for all his performances over the years and his honest efforts, I would still focus on youth and have Tiwary picked ahead of him.
ummm......cuz Irfan Pathan has absolutely no pace in his bowling and has just come out of an injury playing competative cricket after quite some time and not exactly being any good in the IPL? Vinay's place could be argued but Irfan as his replacement is a no no. Rayadu, Rahane, Manoj Tiwari are all ahead of Saurabh on the backs of strong domestic seaons and Rayadu having played well in the IPL and a decent season. Mishra's place is up for contention but recent form would suggest that Mishra was better off. Jadeja is long, long way away from a comeback.

Tiwary has the talent but is not yet ready for international cricket.
Lol, you wouldnt have said that, has you seen him face Dale Steyn during last year’s CL T20 in South Africa. The way he stood his ground and manhandled Dale Steyn, I have never seen anyone else do that to Steyn, before or since.

:hysterical::hysterical: He was 17 off 30 balls by the time Pathan had got the victory all but ensured - and yeah scoring at a SR of less than 60 when the asking rate was around the 8 RPO when he started is called struggling to put bat to ball.

For the nth time, Stop looking at players’ skills in isolation for ODIs and T20s. This is not test match selection that we’re talking about. . Its not about what they can do the individual aspects of their game (batting, bowling or fielding), but what they offer, as a package. And Puhleeez, can we stop hollering about Irfan’s pace at least now? Lets not forget, the question has never been about Irfan’s pace. When he ran out of favor in late 2006 and early 2007, it was not his pace that was letting him down, it was his lackluster control that cost him dearly. It looks like he has gotten that back, which is all is relevant. I agree that he may not among the top 2 first choice Indian ODI bowlers, but he is the PERFECT 3rd seamer/no.8 India has EVER produced. Guys like him, with multiple skill sets, make a good Indian team GREAT. And the mere fact that you think Rahane and Rayudu are ahead of Tiwary and Mishra ahead of Ojha and Jadeja tells me you watched little or no Indian cricket in the last 15-18 months. So I am not going to waste my breadth arguing with you there.

It's actually depressing to watch S.Tiwary bat. The one consolation is that the IPL hasn't ruined him. What talent was there to ruin? I had forgotten about Jadeja actually. This wouldve been a good opportunity for him, never mind.

Lol, I had a strong suspicion that you didn’t watch the game when you said Tiwary struggled to put bat to ball. They were only confirmed when you had to dig the scorecard to come up with tidbits to prove your case. Let me break it down to you one more time – I saw the game, both live and the highlights and I can tell you for a FACT – Tiwary wasn’t struggling to put bat to ball. He was doing what was EXACTLY asked of him – Holding one end up while Yusuf was going bonkers at the other end. That is the ESSENCE of sensible ODI batting.

I also watched the game and Tiwary did'nt look like anything you're saying - you seem to think that he was "holding up one end" but that was because he was unable to score and was struggling, not because he was "holding one end" :hysterical:

If you think Tiwary was ‘struggling to score’ that day, then you can keep that opinion, I couldn’t care less.

Yeah okay. I don't want to waste my time arguing on such a crazy notion that Tiwary played even a decent innings in that game. If I get the time I will try to get the highlights and give you a live demonstration of his mediocre batting later.

Come on though, it's not like he doesnt have previous for struggling. As I recall his first ODI innings was a bit of a joke too, got easy runs in two balls at the end when Raina had laid all the groundwork for him..

you know what, you may be right...after all Tiwary's FC avg is 20 runs more than Rahane....oh wait...its the other way round. At no.8 we need a bowler, not a trundler who bats a bit. As a packaged player, Irfan offers just that. No captain would trust him during the middle and late overs. Mishra's spot was in contention (refer previous posts) but in the last series he took 18 wickets in 6 games whereas Ojha managed 5 in 5. Ojha as a defensive spinner if fine, but Mishra is the attacking option whereas Bhajji and Ashwin play the containment role. Having said that, had Ojha been selected it wouldn't have been to much of a problem either. And as for Sir Jadeja, a cameo of 20-30 across a couple of matches in the IPL isn't exactly a litmus test for batting.
