ravishingravi Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 According to most reports. Seems like another feather on Obama's cap. Taliban in denial. Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar dead: report Kabul: Reports originating in Afghanistan suggest that Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar may have been killed in Pakistan. The same report claimed that the shadowy Taliban leader has been out of contact with his followers for the past 11 days. According to the report, Mullah Omar was apparently being ferried to a safe location somewhere in North Waziristan from the Balochi capital of Quetta when he was shot dead by an ex-ISI official accompanying him. Apparently he was accompanied by ex-ISI chief and long-time patron-in-chief of Islamic militants in Pakistan, Gen Hamid Gul. Gen Gul has denied the story saying he has never met Mullah Omar in his life. The news was circulated by Afghan news outlet TOLO news, a media outfit close to the Afghan government and its security agencies. On the face of it the story does sound improbable as North Waziristan can hardly be described as a 'safe' place – it would easily rank as the most unsafe place on the planet. It is riddled with intelligence operatives of foreign powers, Pakistan's own ISI, and critically, is also the home base of the Haqqani Network, a militia closely identified with the ISI that maintains only a loose fraternal relationship with the Mullah Omar-led Taliban movement. The Haqaani family's contempt for the one-eyed Omar is a matter of record and it is very unlikely that Mullah Omar would like to settle down in such a friendless and hostile environment. North Waziristan also experiences CIA drone strikes almost every alternate day and Mullah Omar's advent in this region would be welcomed by the Americans as it would give them a very even chance of getting him into the sights of a drone's missile http://www.domain-b.com/defence/general/20110523_mullah_omar.html
Sachinism Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 NYT reporting 'Taliban spokesperson denies the claims'
ganeshran Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Hamid Gul accompanying Mullah Omar is an absolute joke. Gul, who is an attention wh_ore and has a constant media fetish, would never be entrusted with such a sensitive task. He might have been involved actively in the creation of the Taliban, but is completely irrelevant now. His only claim to fame is his old links which he constantly brags about
AfghanCricFan Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 He just gone missing Hopefully he is dead such bastard SOP Son of Pakistan
ganeshran Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 ^ He was created by the Pakistani government and CIA during the Soviet war. Pak govt continued to support him even after USA left and was one of the few govts to have recognized the Taliban regime, despite their brutal acts.

USA gives billions in aid to Pakistan but majority of Pakistanis criticize US for trying to destabilize it, including politicians like Imran Khan and Nwaz Sharif. Ordinary people living in refugee camps on the border are more concerned with earning their livelihood than worrying about which country is responsible for their troubles. Once Afghanistan stabilizes, then they will return home.

USA only gives it because it needs Pakistan for its war in Afganistan. The day they can solve the problem there the aid will stop. On the other hand Pakistanis are stuck with these Afgans for 30 years. Their country is no longer under Taliban control so dunno what they are waiting for.

True that USA has preferred Sharif over other leaders in the past, but he and his brother's position constantly reeks of doublespeak. Nawaz criticizes the Taliban in front of USA but never does so at home. Shahbaz is a well known US baiter. The reason behind aid is obvious - why else would any country give free handouts to other, unless it had need for cooperation? But that doesnt discount the fact that US has been pouring substantial money into Pakistan - (3 billion an year) apart from the reimbursement for the war on terror. So an end to the obvious double speak would be to reject US aid and stop all cooperation in the Afghan war, but why doesnt the Pakistan govt do this? Because it needs the money. Thats why a tacit agreement is to vehemently protest publicly against US intervention while giving a silent go ahead privately.

Your remark in wishing death to 3 million people is in horribly poor taste. Wrong! Mullah Omar rose up in the aftermath of thw soviet withdrawal chaos. Warlords like Gulbudin Hekmatayr were running the country and loot and rape was common place. The legend goes that two young afghan girls (under 16) were taken to the local military garrison and raped. Omar went with about 15 men and killed pretty much everyone in the camp and hung the commander. He then gathered together all the mujahids who fought the afghan - soviet war under his leadership. They were called Talibs (student) of the Mullah and hence the taliban. If you want a crash course on afghan history for the last 3 centuries let me know. :D
