Who is the best reserve opener in India?

We need to explore options for ODIs. Sehwag and SRT won't play ODIs regularly. VJ is a failure. Dropthiv isn't good enough and he can't play if Dhoni is in the 11.
Odis is not a problem IMO as Gambhir is around and Sehwag will last for some more time. Then we have the likes of Dhawan on the fringes. But Tests is a worry after Sehwag as Sehwag was a gamechanger in Tests and India owes lot of its recent success to Sehwag.

I dont know about this hate against VJ ,as a opener,so far in the tests he has played for India,he has never looked out of place and has been successful. He is our best reserve opener for test matches.

In Tests. M Vijay. He averages 60 as an opener for India.
No he doesn't, he averages 46 as opener. Anyway, he's only played ten innings in total at that position so hard to draw too many conclusions from that, and to be fair he has always played as injury replacement.

But once Sehwag retires India will sorely miss him as Vijay, or anyone else, will not be able to fill Sehwag's shoes. But yeah for the Tests Vijay is a decent bet and the best we have at the moment.

So we cannot blame him for no having better averages. For ODIs a big No No.

Well I never said he is our reserve ODI opener.Problem with him in ODIs is that he doesnt know how to build up a innings, plays too many dot balls and never looks for singles.

Mind you, his Twenty20 international record is rubbish as well. Anyway, he will get the full series in the West Indies Tests, for the first time in his career, rather than just a Test here and there. Let's see what he does there.

He has done well in away conditions. Why Indian selectors consider him a fill in gap player only?
because we already have M$D who rarely rests for series' so no point in having 2 wicket keepers in an ODI 11. Although Kartikh can certainly be there in the squad.

I think a radical approach to mould someone in Sehwag's role. It will be tough to match his calibre. With all the names mentioned above none of them will able to portray an ounce of "destructive" to opposition bowlers. Hence, focus should be get someone like Yusuf Pathan. Pundits tend to dismiss Yusuf as flash in the pan swing and swish, and being oblivous to his first class record of an ability to play long innings with a temperament to match Viru.

Yeah. Lets hope he does well in Tests and phails in ODIs so we can move onto the next deserving player.
