ganeshran Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Indian Navy has got 5 new Mig-29K fighter jets (to add to the already delivered 4) for the aircraft carrier INS Vikramiditya (formerly known as Admiral Gorshkov) which will replace the ageing INS Viraat. The Russian MiG Aircraft Corporation has delivered the second batch of five MiG-29K fighter jets to the navy, to add to its four, for which it has raised the new "Black Panthers" squadron. India along with Russia, the manufacturer of the naval fighter, are the only countries to have acquired these fighters, which will be deployed on the INS Vikramaditya (former Gorshkov) aircraft carrier, under re-fit in Russia. Indian Navy gets new Russian MiG-29K fighters The newly acquired Russian carrier-operated MiGs are considered to be far superior to Indian Navy's current Sea harrier jump jets. Under the Gorshkov aircraft deal inked between the two countries in 2004, Russia is to supply 12 single-seater MiG-29K fighters and four two-seater MiG-29KUB trainer-cum-combat jets. According to a MiG release first of four MiG-29Ks and MiG-29KUBs delivered to India have been formally inducted by the Indian Navy's "Black Panthers" squadron in February 2010. MiG Corporation has also delivered flight simulator and other technical equipment to the Indian Navy. In March 2010, Russia and India signed another $1.5 billion contract on the supplies of 29 additional MiG-29K Fulcrum-D carrier-based fighter jets and the deliveries are scheduled to commence next year, about the time Moscow is expected to deliver retrofitted Gorshkov aircraft carrier after serious delays.

Russians wanted $2.9 billion for it, while initially agreed price was 947 million :omg: But now its settled and India bargained to $2.3 billion. I think we will get it latest by first half of 2013.

This is not the 126 MRCAs which were being tendered. Secondly, from a pure technology point of view there is no point in buying the FA18 or the F16 since A) the F16 is an aging aircraft and B) the indian defence complex doesn't have too much US tech and hence this would pose integration problems. You want to try to avoid diversifying your tech too much. We largely have russian tech with which we can integrate some of the israeli avionics and European tech, this is what we should stick to in my opinion.

As gunner pointed it out, these are solely for the Navy's use.... Moreover, from a technology transfer perspective and also in terms of the best technology available to us, I would definitely say that the Europeans offered a much better deal...So, from a long term perspective, this is win win situation..

These are carrier based aircraft for our INS Vikramiditya.

Plus after the MMRCA, India will most likely sign a contract for the Eurofighter Typhoon

Ghauri -3 was supposed to be a longer range missile but hasnt been tested yet. Nasr too is a very good addition with very less range but its nuclear capable so can act quickly with low yield nuclear bombs. But Pakistan doesnt have its own SAM program like India does. There was talk about buying the SPADA but I'm not sure if its already bought.

This is a rookie error, couldnt they predict how much heat it could withstand what was being generated. Epic stupidity.
