India will be missing several players from the victorious World Cup campaign including regular skipper MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh, leaving the team with only two regular frontline batsmen in Raina and Virat Kohli. Raina said this was a great chance for players like S Badrinath, Rohit Sharma, Saurabh Tiwary and Shikhar Dhawan to replicate their domestic form at the international stage. "It's a great opportunity for the youngsters who have done well in domestic cricket. I hope they will do well," said the 25-year-old Raina at the pre-departure media conference of the team on Tuesday sitting alongside newly-appointed chief coach Duncan Fletcher. "I am really honoured to be leading the side. I am happy with the side as we have some very good batsmen in Rohit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, S Badrinath, Shikhar Dhawan all of whom have done well in first-class cricket. "Badrinath especially has done well in first-class cricket and deserves to be in the team. I hope we will do well in the West Indies," said Raina. Raina and the young team is expected to be under a bit of pressure with Harbhajan Singh the only senior player in the side. But the skipper said the players have got used to playing under pressure. "There's always pressure and we have done well under pressure. We have done well over the last three years and have won the World Cup. It's for us as players to execute the plans of the coach well. Ram Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Couple of things; Raina’s position as the stand in captain is numbered. Kohli is the obvious successor-in-waiting. So Suresh should enjoy the honor of leading the country while it lasts – not many people get it. No.2 – I think there’s an excellent chance that we may lose both the T20 and ODI series. We have picked the wrong batting side for the conditions, with too many batsmen relying on touch/timing. It is really up to our bowling, specifically our spinners (or conversely, the inadequacy of the Windies batsmen), that could win us this series.

If anything, Raina’s personal characteristics don’t make for captaincy material at all. For starters, he still goes about his job on the field with his trademark boyish enthusiasm – jumping up and down, hugging fielders and celebrating like he just landed on the moon. While that alone does not automatically disqualify him from the position of captaincy, it does raise some questions about the perception his team mates have about him. They may love him, but will they respect him? Virat is far more mature in his behavior than Suresh is. And while his slightly arrogant/dismissive demeanor is a bit of a dampener, he has been getting progressively better. Virat is significantly more accomplished at handling the media than Suresh is and that vital in this era of sound-byte reporting. Plus, he’s also a future middle order test candidate for India, while Suresh’s application for that post has significant loose holes. If anything, I can see the combination of Virat and Ashwin leading the charge for India, once we move past the Dhoni – Sehwag generation. In the short time we have seen him player, both for India and CSK, Aswhin has been hugely impressive in every which way.

At least for some years we'll see the likes of Gambhir/Sehwag/Yuvraj etc being the vice captain under Dhoni and then maybe after 3-4 years we'll finally see one of the young generation being named the successor and things can change dramatically in 3-4 years. I think at this moment both Raina and Kohli have pretty much an equal chance of being the future captain in ODIs/T20s. No.2 – I think there’s an excellent chance that we may lose both the T20 and ODI series. We have picked the wrong batting side for the conditions, with too many batsmen relying on touch/timing. It is really up to our bowling, specifically our spinners (or conversely, the inadequacy of the Windies batsmen), that could win us this series. The WI team thats been named for this series is pretty weak and I expect this Indian team to win the ODI series. As for the T20 match, anyone can win it.
