putrevus Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 If BCCI doesnt want UDRS in bilateral series , then it has right to do it, it did not object UDRS being a part of world cup so what is the issue here. Every other country has T-20 league so why everyone is against IPL only.

And please don't bring in the peurile arguments like " like it or not it is popular and it sells" ... well Porn sells too why dont we make it legal to show it on big screen ? You don't understand the real problem with test cricket and why T20 is popular, do you? Test cricket takes forever. People don't have the time to spend 5 days on a match. Yes they did once upon a time cause that was the only way to watch cricket. Gone are those days. When you give people a more viable option in terms of the time it takes to complete a single game, ofc it is going to be popular. Comparing it to porn is about as absurd as it gets. There is nothing immoral about shortening the game to a more manageable format where it allows fans to watch an entire match without freezing their lives for 6 hours x 5 days. Instead of trying to find ways to make an archaic format more interesting, we should be trying to see how to make the shorter format be more skill oriented and less of a swing and miss type batting and how to make bowler friendly pitches so that there is more even match up between the bat and the ball. I love test cricket, but I also think it is absurd to expect someone to watch a game for 30 hours. It has in the Bilateral Series by using string arm tactics. That has more to do with our players (read Dhoni, SRT) strong arming the board into saying they don't like it. If BCCI was able to strong arm it, they would have prevented it for the entire WC.

Maybe the Sri Lankans miss that treatment but I think the English and everyone on their bandwagon need to just deal with it and accept it. You have to credit Cricket Australia for seeing the writing on the wall early enough and mending fences with the BCCI. I know the Aussies get a lot of flak but I have always thought them to be sound businessmen and very much business focused rather than the elitist & pompous asses the ECB are.
yoda Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 What you don't understand here is that cricket is not one of those sports that can be shortened but yet retain the true skills that highlight the crux of the sport. Well ODI cricket managed to do it and it is a shortened format of the game. Once you start doing that you will find that there is no difference between Baseball and Cricket. Why not just watch baseball then ? There is difference between T20 and baseball still, the only similarity being the duration of the game. Nobody watches ball-by-ball of every test match ... not even me. You need to find a way to get over that and learn how to enjoy test cricket by either watching highlights or record it and watch it when you can at a later time. BTW most good test cricket is played on weekends and it is perfect for those in the USA. What if Sehwag is batting in the middle of the night at some random time when the opponent gets all out. You miss that these days, you miss half of our interesting batting. No one knows when the interesting moments are going to be in a test, except for guessing based on previous day's events and current match situation. This could come on the weekend, weekday, whenever. And don't tell me that people have time to spend nearly 4 hours for a gazillion matches on a daily basis for 6-7 weeks. No one watches T20s on a daily basis. People typically catch the team they follow or other interesting matchups. And India play an average of 8 test matches per year for crying out loud. Well they would be playing more of this format if it had no competition. Given that it takes forever, other more manageable formats are eating up it's time. And with all due respect no you don't really love Test Cricket. You don't even understand the spirit of Test Cricket to be honest. Well cricket is not all about test cricket for me. However, when Eng/Ind series comes around, I would catch as much action as I can. I may not sit and analyze ball by ball, but will see it and enjoy it for it is worth. That still is a BCCI problem because if they cant manage their players then its a bigger problem. They did try their very best to bully their way into stopping UDRS in WC too. Luckily it didn't pan out that way otherwise we would have most definitely lost the Semi-Final but for UDRS. Now despite all that if these bozos still cant comprehend the value of UDRS then they are numb nuts as the world is rightly telling them. In a bilateral series it is a bit different because it is not a ICC Decision to make and it is between the boards and here the individual boards don't have a chance to stand up against BCCI. So individual boards can or need or accept this unless mandated by the ICC. It has nothing to do with the power of the board.

ganeshran Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Loving T20s , ODIs and Test cricket is not a zero sum game. You dont have to love or hate one format at the expense of another. Plus, Apart from leagues like IPL, there are hardly international T20 matches other the T20 world championship years.

O and by the way in a free market, products/services sell at perceived and expected value. The moment they don't perform as per their perceived and expected value, the market ensures either the product/service dies out or becomes more competitive.

They essentially do the hatchet job on behalf of their government or organisations like the ECB. There are two examples in recent times: 1. The UK sale oy typhoons to the saudis - look at how the media tore that issue up. 2. Qatar winning the FIFA bid (England was expected to win) - again see the impact the British media has had. It is a ploy, the British are the absolute masters of media management. Half the people don't even understand the game.You could make that closer to 95%. While the Aussie media has achieved legendary status when it comes to create propaganda and media bullsh!t on sport, especially cricket, the British and American media are the pure masters of this art form.

In golf, the equivalent would be 1 round which takes a good part of a day and even within that if you are following a specific player (more like watching a single team), it would be a few hours to finish 18 holes.

Do you really think there is no harm done when people like Gayle openly ditch Test match cricket to play in the gravy train ? If people are sooo confident of the value of Tontee-Tontee why dont the IPL franchises start setting base salaries that are comparable to what BCCI pays for annual contracts + match fees and then see what the cricketers would opt for ? It is called survival of the fittest. If test cricket is better, it will find it's way, if not, it will die a slow death. If Tontee-tontee is worthless, it will die a slow/fast death instead.

Are you saying the IPL needs to ask Gayle to play for free? :giggle:
