King Tendulkar Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Sometimes when I watch Raina he looks and is pure class. All the shots and temperemantally strong. He just looks magic, like in WC and now in windies. Also in tests when first started. He looks the real deal. BUT we all know the problem he has. Fast short pitch bowling overseas. There is a rubbish lazy syterotype that goes around about indian batsman when they go overseas dont like chin music. Over the last decade this myth has been destroyed and put away for pre 2000 era. However, Raina is one player contuing the sterotype. Can Rain ever over come his short basll isssues overseas? He is 24, will he learn, cope and adjust. Or will he always be a mess in such situations and never deliver. Like in SA seriers were he was gone. Short ball issues meant he was mentally all over the place and getting out to all types of balls and just poking outside of stump and giving cathing practice. Or will he do a dada and develop a method, technique and mental fortitude to over come the issues and deliver anywere. Juries out? Can Rain overcome the short ball and become a great indian bat in all formats all over the world?

So not much of experience outside Asia. As he gets to play outside the sub continent more and more, he will surely develop his game. About him going onto become great, well in ODIs, he looks set to top 10k runs, in tests I am not so sure . May go the Yuvraj way. Great in ODIs, mediocre in tests.

But it would take a lot of mental toughness, like Ganguly or Jimmy or even Steve Waugh to overcome this weakness. He can look ugly while facing these deliveries as long as he stays and scores. And the good thing is, these days there are not many bowlers who can expose this. Only SA and to an extent England have the bowlers. i have not included Austrailia here because there's a lot of transition going around in that team. But I still feel facing such deliveries is more of a mental aspect.

He will remain a devastating middle-order batsman in ODIs and T20Is, one who can win games under extreme pressure, but poor at Test level.

say2chander Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Doesn't lokk like so,he will again face problems similar to SA. Don't think he has technique and temperament for a test player against a good bowling attack. 'leaving the good ball' is not something he has shown anywhere.

yoda Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 He did play some short balls well, more like a hop to get to the height of the delivery to defend it down. Would like for him to develop an aggressive approach towards the short balls. Learn to hook/pull more like Gilly.
