For Krishnamachari Srikkanth, the chairman of the BCCI selection committee, it’s retaining the position achieved for now and dominating the world cricket over a long period of time, just like ex-world champs Australia. The renowned cricketer is in Delhi for a Special Address at The National Education Summit 2011, an initiative by the Dainik Bhaskar Group. “It gives me immense pleasure to be associated with initiative taken by the Dainik Bhaskar Group.†The 51-year-old former captain, known by friends and fans as Cheeka, is very hopeful of two good upcoming tours – Australia and England. "We have two good tours coming up soon with England and Australia. And it would be an excellent experience to win on the foreign soil, like true world champions.†On current West Indies tour: The chief selector feels that the current young brigade touring the Caribbean is doing very well. He feels elated to see that we have a good bench strength. However, he is not a believer in comparisons like how this team would fare against the ones better than West Indies. For him, all that matters is the fact that the team is performing well when on a mission. Retirement of senior cricketers: “Of course one cannot replace a Sachin Tendulkar,†this is a spontaneous Srikkanth on the issue of retirement of the senior players like the master blaster. But, keeping the hopes alive, Cheeka is confident of a natural process of transition in the Indian cricket team. Backed by a good bench strength, he feels that though there will surely be a void post their retirement, but there’s no dearth of talent and a natural transition is sure to happen. On MS Dhoni: Just like every cricket lover in the country, the man who was once known for hitting balls outside the boundary whenever on pitch is very impressed with Mahendra Singh Dhoni. But unlike Dhoni’s on-field antiques, what impresses Srikkanth more is the skill of the Indian skipper to “keep things very simpleâ€. “Dhoni has his own simple way of handling things, and that is the best part of him as a cricketer as well as a captain,†feels Srikkanth. Impact of IPL on team selection: It is domestic cricket and not just IPL that matters while selecting the members of the national squad, clarifies Srikkanth. He says that the performance of a player in the Indian Premier League is just a pointer, and not the sole criteria, and as a matter of fact, it ranks much below the consistency of a cricketer at domestic level. However, the selection committee chairman does not deny that IPL performance adds value to a player who has performed in the domestic tournaments as well.

i think the selectors are giving a chance to those who did well in ranji and duleep trophies. But when a bowler like vinay kumar takes the highest number of wickets in those tournaments, we gotta see if he is really good for international cricket. i remember once joginder sharma got the highest number of wicket in domestic tournaments, who is absolutely a trundler in international games. selectors are not wise or gutsy enuf to select bowlers like varun, umesh.
