If FIAT paid the taxes, the government received the tax on payment for Sachin's services. If FIAT had paid him in cash, then the government would have received lesser income tax since the import duty is around 120%. The government is not at a loss here. Sachin only got tax free income because FIAT decided to pay the taxes. If my employer pays extra to cover my income taxes, I would also get tax free income without breaking laws.

It was not 'personal/emotional gift', rather an alternative to some compensation. Perhaps one of the reasons why he was so possessive/careful about the car. it was planned that he would sell it off in future I am sure SRT would take utmost care of personal gifts. Remember - even in one of the most ecstatic of his moments (WC win) he did not forget about his biggest fan.

I dont know how close Schumacher is to Tendulkar, but only a fool will think that they are so close that Schumacher will gift a Ferrari. For me it was a case of of Fiat making a payment by attempting to use Sachins name, and regulatory loophole to bypass import duty, for his services as brand ambassdor to Fiat. So whats wrong here?
