Tendulkar loses top spot in ICC Test rankings to Kallis ESPNcricinfo staff June 24, 2011 Sachin Tendulkar's decision to not tour the West Indies has made him concede the top spot in the ICC Test rankings for batsmen to Jacques Kallis, who also continues to be the top-ranked allrounder. A player loses 1% of his ratings points for every Test he misses. This means Tendulkar will lose more points as he will not figure in the remaining two Tests against West Indies as well. He will, however, still manage to enter next month's Test series against England in second position as there is some gap between him and third-placed Kumar Sangakkara. Rahul Dravid's match-winning century in the Kingston Test sees him return to the top 20 in the rankings for the first time since November 2010, when he slipped downwards following the home Test series against New Zealand. Dravid earned 45 ratings points which has lifted him nine places to 20th position. VVS Laxman, who had a rare twin failure in Kingston, has gone out of the top 10, falling five places to 13th position. Ishant Sharma, who took six wickets in Kingston, has moved up three places to 11th position in the ICC Test rankings for bowlers. if you are not injured and decide to skip a match then points are deducted. stupid rule, really.

This rule make sure that a batsmen deliberately doesnt miss test matches on difficult away tours or against teams with deadly fast bowlers to maintain ranking points like it used to happen in 90s.

Players do not lose point and slowly slip out of the rankings after they retire. They are taken off the list when they're done with the game.

But Bradman is retired and those points are irrelevant now as SRT's points will be irrelevant in contemporary cricket.

I know, but if they were not to lose points they could still claim to be active and not play anymore to maintain their ranking - they could even make a provision for it in their will. :winky: Quite obviously the idea of any ranking system is to give a snapshot of recent form and if someone is not playing the assigned matches then rankings will not reflect recent form if not compensated for the absence. Someone out with injury for one year cannot realistically expect to be called number 1 on recent form, for example.

I agree with the system of deducting points for missing games for exactly the reason you've mentioned. I was just pointing out that a player is immediately taken off the list the moment he has played his last match and does not keep losing points till he drops out of the top 100.

If Steyn today do a Gayle today but not retire officially, no bowler can match him and he will remain No 1 bowler indefinitely.

Anderson, Zaheer,Morkel for past few years have been hovering around 750 mark. Swann is still 100 points less than Steyn. The gap will increase when Steyn destroy Aus & SL at home.

Players should and do lose points when injured. Any player dont get extra points if he maintain fitness and plays all matches. When banned from boards, they are taken out from rankings. Asif & Yousuf were taken out from top 10 list when they were banned. Rankings system dont count for lost time due to weather which is why curent system is a joke and no one takes it seriously.

If they take players off the rankings when they retire, what do they do for Pakistani players :hmmmm2: Are they penalised when they unretire and need to be included back on the list. What about MoYo's ambigous retirement? what about Afridi's banning and unbanning? Are these usecases addressed?
