Nova Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 In my opinion, there is no higher power or divine force. What we are experiencing is alteration of mind through chemicals in the form of hallucinogens. The Aya effect is due to increased levels of the neurotransmitter "serotonin" which is a mood altering molecule. Many anti-depressants increase serotonin and so does ayahuasca. It also depends on the state of your mind and if one has mental disorders to begin with, you run the risk of going into deep psychosis. My emphasis lies on the fact that there is no divine intervention here. The emotions we experience are due to physical changes occurring in the brain brought forward by chemical activity i.e interaction of molecules. To put it simply, biology is nothing but chemistry and chemistry is the manifestation of physics. Evolution over a long period of time has arranged our molecules in a way which has enabled us to have higher intelligence and consciousness. Neuroscientists and psychologists are working on mapping the human brain to understand this phenomenon and it has already been established that there is a "physical" basis to it. There is no outside influence as in the intervention of some higher power. The mystical experience of hallucinogens has a neurochemical basis. One day in the future we might be able to create artificial brains which may very well experience emotions in a similar way. Ramachandran, professor of neuroscience at UCSD, talks about the physical basis of consciousness in the video below. Better to listen to this rather than the quackery by Deepak Chopra. Found all over the Amazon, Ayahuasca and it's incredible ability to heal has been slowly but steadily creeping into western consciousness. Metamorphosis is a documentary that follows several westerners as they undergo five Ayahuasca ceremonies and experience the gamut of emotions - from utter fear to outright ecstasy. It also explores the shamans who work with the medicine as well as all the key elements of an Ayahuasca ceremony. The film also tells the story of Hamilton Souther, who earlier in life had no belief of and in spirit. After having a spiritual awakening, Hamilton is led to the Amazon where he apprentices as an Ayahuascero, or person who practices medicine with Ayahuasca. Hamilton and Maestro Don Alberto (an indigenous master shaman for over thirty years that practices with Hamilton) take us through the ceremonies as well as explain the meaning behind them. Really, anyone who wants to understand what a complete ceremony is like (four stages of ceremonies over a week), should watch this documentary. I could see Flamy there... laughing and screaming "I am happy!" All the stuff he has written here...can be experienced through the documentary. I am still a skeptic - not so much of the visions but the presence of a spiritual world. They say the visions are real, but I wonder if it is more of a psychological effect. I guess one would have to actually experience Ayahuasca to come to any sort of conclusion.

None of them were content in life. It almost seemed to me that they went to a shamanic "shrink" if I may say so. Then there was the use of certain medicinal plants which is said to carry the spirits of the tree. By using these plants, the spirit enters the Ayahuasca. And then the shaman is blowing up smoke through his mouth in people's heads, legs, etc to imbibe the spirit energy. Really, I am all for mind expansion and altered consciousness, but spirituality and attainment of God as depicted towards the end of the documentary, is a concept which I am finding it hard to grasp. What solace I can take by watching this, is that some of the participants were atheists but realized some sort of enlightenment in the end. The other thing I found interesting is that if one is skeptical to begin with, then they might not experience the full scope of the ceremony...leaving them unsatisfied. This is like saying to me...oh if you don't believe in it, then you will not get the mystical experience. Fine print...eh?

Emotional baggage is what I have referred to as emotional toxins earlier in this thread. Aya is a purgative and will help you purge the unwanted stuff by showing you your true nature - your Divine nature. He is probably blowing tobacco (not cigarette), which is considered an ally to Aya. To give you context, when I talk about Aya or the shamans talk about Aya, we are talking about an actual Spirit - our Mother Ayahuasca. She manifests in physical form through the vine Ayahuasca and the plant Chacruna. The medicine is a mixture of both Ayahuasca and Chacruna. Now, tobacco is considered an ally spirit to Aya. A cleansing agent. Very different from what we usually believe (heck, I hate cigarettes and thought tobacco and cigarettes are the same) OK, let me clarify something. Ayahuasca is not a hallucinogen. It is an entheogen. Very sacred. Entheogens (theo=god, spirit, gen=creation) like Aya, are sacred, sacred gifts. Coming to your question. As I related in the thread earlier, my friend was an absolute cynic, atheist and always chided me whenever I talked about spirituality. I'd just laugh at his arguments and not even engage him. Because, I'm not here to prove anything. Everyone will find Truth in their own way. Now, this friend of mine is much more at peace and much more in love with life. I don't know how your experience will be like. Mama gives everyone just what they need at that point in their life. I can promise you this though: You will understand what I'm babbling about here :P Your experience will take you to the depths of your own psyche, split open your wounds and purge your toxins. And your perspective about life will certainly change. You remember what you have forgotten and forget what you don't need. My latest ceremony was a fabulous reminder of how caught up we get in our stories and the illusion of mediocrity. We are Divine Children. We are Love itself. It is very important to do this in a ceremony. Doing it alone by ordering it on the internet will not serve you. It may even feck you up. Blessings to you, brother. In 1999, Entheogenic was one of the two major psybient projects (the other being Shpongle) whose experimentation influenced the psychedelic electronic scene. Entheogenic's first release "Entheogenic", an elaborate concept album, recounts the tale of an Ayahuasca journey, with layered trance melodies and texturally rich arrangements. The album was strongly influenced by Ayahuasca, which became a musical translation of a 5 hour journey through different levels of intense psychedelic experiences. Oh Aya mama...
