Dixit, a victim of pressure TIMES NEWS NETWORK / Akhilesh Kumar Singh KANPUR, June 11: The likes of Alastair Cook of England, Sri Lankan cricketers Upul Tharanga and F Maharoof, West Indian player Denesh Ramdin and our very own Irfan Pathan were Subhash Dixit’s under-15 contemporaries. All of them have made it to the top league, but Dixit could not manage a berth in his state Ranji team or the Under-22 team. However, there was a time when he captained the Under-15 India team at the World Cup in England. Dixit committed suicide last Saturday by jumping off a highrise close to the venue of his dreams - the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. His death has been attributed to factors like financial problems, unemployment and failure in cricket. But Dixit’s suicide has not only exposed the ugly side of gentlemen’s game but also the frustration that creeps into youngsters when they compare themselves to stars like Sachin, Saurav and Sehwag at a very young age. Dixit did not belong to a well-to-do family and was struggling for a job. Subhash’s father, RP Dixit suffers from a mental disability which also plagues one of his two sisters. With no earning member in the family, the young man was under pressure to discharge his responsibilities. Dixit had shifted base to West Bengal for the last two seasons where his uncle, ex-UP Ranji player OP Tiwari was posted with Eastern Railway. “Subhash was representing the Under-22 Bengal team and we were hopeful of his comeback at the national platform”, said Tiwari, who has come to Kanpur to perform the cricketers last rites. Cricketer Friends of Dixit, however, said that selectors always ignored Subhash. After representing the country at junior level, Dixit deserved a berth in the state Ranji team at least. One of his friends, Nagesh said that Dixit lacked resources as well as a godfather to make it to the state team. Many of his juniors, including R P Singh, Suresh Raina, Piyush Chawla are playing international cricket and have got jobs but Dixit failed to reach that height, which also frustrated him, said one of his friends. UPCA officials, meanwhile, maintain that no injustice was done to him. It’s director, Jyoti Bajpai said that it was high time parents assessed whether their wards were mentally strong to confront the rising competition in cricket at all levels. Former Test cricketer Gopal Sharma said that commercialisation of cricket and its glamour was taking its toll on youngsters.

22 years is not too old to make it to the domestic team is it? Feel sorry for the lad. Unfortunately this won't really help his family matters.

Really sad.... while everyone knows thateverything is not right with selections specially in the regional teams....... But everyone who doesn't make it also tends to blame the selectors ..... We will never know if he really had it in him to play big time....very sad! Agree with you ...22 is too young for any one to give up..... And also agree with Jyoti bajpai.....
