For 72-year-old Borde, the appointment is no new task. He served as manager during India's tour of Pakistan in 1989. He also had two stints as chairman of the national selection committee, from 1984 to 1986 and then from 1999 to 2002. Holysmoke
Former India captain Chandu Borde has been appointed manager of the Indian cricket team for the tours of Ireland and England [Images], it was learnt on Tuesday. The Board of Control of Cricket in India also appointed former India players Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh as the team's bowling and fielding coaches respectively on the tours. For 72-year-old Borde, the appointment is no new task. He served as manager during India's tour of Pakistan in 1989. He also had two stints as chairman of the national selection committee, from 1984 to 1986 and then from 1999 to 2002. "This has come as a very pleasant surprise. I am very happy to accept it. I take it as a challenge," said the former India captain and middle order batting mainstay from Pune. "I was the manager in 1989 in Pakistan which was a very tough tour. Our team did very well. That was also the debut series for Sachin [Tendulkar]. "Coming to the present assignment I know all the boys and I look forward to the challenge," he added. A leg-spin all-rounder, Borde played 55 Tests, scored 3061 runs and took 52 wickets. India will play three ODIs against South Africa in Ireland, between June 26 and July 1. They then contest a one-off one-day international against Pakistan at Glasgow, Scotland, on July 3 before moving to England for a full-fledged series -- between July 7 and September 8 -- comprising three Tests and seven ODIs. Lurker
Probably the best Indian candidate, and certainly one that comes with the least of baggages. Chandu Borde had been around for a while and his previous stints where he was a Manager will greatly help him. I am not sure if he ever was Indian coach but then at the time he was Manager, the manager itself was the coach. The only worry is the age since he 72. Then again it can also be a boon as the players could stand up for themselves and take decisions when needed. xxx Link to comment

Ram
My grandpa isnt 72.... this is ridiculous. you cant send an old pensioner to manage a cricket team.. i doubt if he will even remember the names of the players.. Imagine this.. Situation 1 Borde -- Ok Munaf, get on the bus.. its time for practice.. Player -- How many times should i tell you ?? my name is Sreesanth. Munaf is that tall guy with moppy hair who always sits on the couch and does nothing.. Situation 2... Borde - Headingly always seams. Lets have Prasad in the eleven Rahul -- err.. but Prasad isnt in the squad.. he retired long time ago. Borde -- What ??? i saw him the other day ! he was practicing with the boys.. Rahul -- He is the bowling coach , Mr.Borde.. Borde -- Oh ya ya.. you told me right... sorry , forgot to jot it down in the diary.. Link to comment

Ram
Here is another one... Situation -- Team meeting... Borde -- This is the master plan guys i developed last night guys.. When Ian Botham bowls , we will have Ganguly face him because he is not comfortable bowling to left handers. And you Zaheer , When you bowl to Gower , make sure you get the nip-backer full and on middle stump. He has got slow feet when he starts his innings.. Rest of Team -- ( look at each other ... shrugs all around... finally Yuvi speaks up..) Mr.Borde , its 9 o clock now.. i think your should take your diabetic pill and go to sleep... Link to comment

I shouted at the top of my voice to him over the phone last night, saying he was appointed cricket manager.. All he kept saying was -- " what ?? Calicut major ?? what are you talking about.. "... His ears are dead Mr.Powar.. no wonder he is complaining on T.V that he didnt hear anything..".. Link to comment
