Should Dravid Open?

There is no question about Dravid could be better than Mukund as an opener. In fact Dravid can be better than most of the youngster at any position. But if Dravid opens then most important place no 3 is vacant. In test matches you need to have player like Dravid at no 3 and not as an opener. Then we need to groom young players for the future. Temporary adjustments are useless. Mukund should get chance to play as opener in case Sehwag doesn't. Giving Dravid opening slot will deprive a young player from this opportunity where he can learn a lot and there will no better option for no 3 slot.

I agree with most of your points but it is only first test when a opening position is vacant. Also considering the fact that Mukund is too raw, is it worth to expose him in opening position against a tough opposition , that too for one match? If Sehwag is not available for whole series , it makes sense to groom Mukund as it gives him enough opportunities and gives him time to adapt even if he fails during first test. I dont mind exposing an youngster for middle order position which is relatively safer, but I dont think Mukund can succeed against swing bowling of Anderson and Broad in his first test itself. Dravid is an experienced pro and can easily manage this slot for first test ,which also gives an option to play an additional player in middle order.

The jury is still out on that one. Let us not jump to conclusions. I am more worried about a rusty GG at this point though the 3 day game and enough time to prepare before the 1st Test should help.

Guys we Indian supporters are always too harsh on the newcomers like Mukund.He has the guts & the temperament to fight it out.He has already shown that.If he works on the ball which comes into the lefties he'll be alright trust me.He has it in him to settle down & play a long innings.So best of luck to him,anyway Dravid should bat at no.3 coz he owns that position.
