Should Dravid Open?

Recommended Posts

Considering the unavailability of Shewag (for at least one if not more tests), it makes sense to have Dravid open, with both Raina and Yuvraj taking up the remaining spots. Thoughts?

Ideally no, but with Mukund's Sadagopan-esque technique, Dravid is as good as a opener! Its his call call on whether he wants to come in to face the first over as opener or the third over as one drop.

Yes It makes more sense for Dravid to open than a noob like Mukund who certainly get out in first few overs which means Dravid has to anyway take the responsibility but we have lost a wicket.

I am less concerned about Mukund failing early given that Gauti and SRT are back. Protecting Dravid is a higher priority. Even if the opening pair can see a few overs off that is still better than Dravid opening.

A resounding NO. Mukund looks to have a decent technique and temperament. No point in playing Yuvraj. He is good for ODIs. I don't think he is suitable for Tests. Besides, don't keep making Dravid a scapegoat. Every time such a situation arises, people want him only to open. He is our best number 3 and should stay that way.

Once bitten, twice shy. Under English conditions I don't expect Dravid to open willingly even if such a situation arises, or Laxman to come at no.3 for that matter!

Would back Anderson to get Dravid out first up if he opened, mind you I would back him to get Mukund out too so im not really sure.

No. While I am also concerned by Mukund's technique against the English seamers, it just isn't worth messing around with the batting line-up just to accommodate a mediocre Test player like Yuvraj.
