NareshK Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 If Zaheer is out for a better part of the series, they should bring back Ojha and play with two spinners irrespective of pitch conditions. Its tough to expect our pace bowling attack without Zaheer to take 20 England wickets. In any case, if they go for a replacement for Zaheer, he will be a pace bowler without much experience anyway. So why not pick Ojha instead ? He has done well for India whenever he got the opportunity but sidelined unfairly.
gaurav92 Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Mukund on those tracks will be a walking wicket so I would fathom Dravid opening the innings and draft in Yuvraj as he can be an option with the ball too. Playing 5 bowlers (given that it will not make much of a difference in our wicket taking ability) is insane and if Zak is not fit, may be get in Sree in and thats it. 3 pacmen along with 2 spinners and Raina as a part time option. I can't see a 5 bowler line up with Dhoni :D
Number Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 no , go with 3 pacers (all 3 fit) and a spinner , 2 part timers like raina and sachin/yuvi can help them , 5 specialist bowlers means we are weakening our strength that's our batting , I can't see munaf/sree taking 5 wickets.

It's not like these weather conditions are challenging that the work load needs to be shared to prevent injuries. Do you seriously think if Munaf or Sreesanth were bowling today the score would have been any different? Yes. If sree was bowling, england would have had about 200 more runs.
Jayaram_IND Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 This is where the lack of a genuine alrounder hits us.India have always picked 7 batsmen and it has been their mind set.5 bowlers is an attacking option but is also a risky option.Maybe once the batsmen settle down in english conditions we can try this but i dont think the indian management will risk it given our culture of bieng a batting side.Besides do you think we have a 5th bowler capable of winning a match on his own or significantly contributing to a win with the ball ?just my opinion.

The rest of the attack will have to step up and they will as they did in the past.

Indian bowling attack always lacked the star quality unlike our batting but they get the job done on the day. A team cant win a test match without the bowlers taking 20 wickets and India is No.1 in test rankings for a reason.
ahilya Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 I would support the idea of 5 bowlers from 2nd test.4 pacers and 1 spinner.Its better to have spare bowler instead of playing with only 3 bowlers if one gets injured (like zaheer yesterday) or when when one gets debarred from the bowling(in case of Praveen in WI,he also got one warning yesterday)

Ultimate_Game Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 I would play Praveen ahead of RP. RP adds variety being a left armer and he generally bowls pretty well in helpful conditions. Plus his left arm round the wkt line a la Zaheer really had Eng batsmen struggling in 2007.

And Praveen has bowled beautifully on this tour, so if I had to bench someone to play RP, it would most probably be Ishant/Sreesanth

And Praveen has bowled beautifully on this tour, so if I had to bench someone to play RP, it would most probably be Ishant/Sreesanth RP always struggles on Indian pitches and looks the part in helpful conditions. He looked good in England in 2007, was pretty decent in Aus in 2008. He doesn't have the pace to be successful in India and needs help from the wkt which he will in English conditions. He should definitely get a game as there's nothing much to lose anyways. Dropping PK is a very tough call but I see more upside in Ishant and Sreesanth.

So RP bowls well abroad but is dropped if he doesn't do well in Indian conditions. Selectors have to keep in mind the guy is pretty good in helpful conditions and should be persisted with. In fact I don't recall RP performing poorly in helpful conditions.
