Five bowlers for the three remaining tests?

If ZAK is down with a hamstring injury, he is probably out of this series. Under those circumstances, if you want to pick 20 wickets and win, I suggest we go in with 5 bowlers and drop a batsman. Your thoughts? Discuss.

I suggested that not long ago but was scorned at. It means VERY long tail, even if Bhajj is a bowler bat now. Perhaps RD can open. It wont happen but it is a good idea

I would still have mukund open and let raina make way for the bowler. We can't do with makeshift opening against anderson and tremlett. The only way we can win or level the series in the absence of ZAK is to play 5 bowlers. The following 3 pitches are all result oriented and we can't possibly play out 3 draws.

The recent batting form of MSD will make this infeasible especially on pitches helpful for bowlers. Also why play 5 bowlers just for the sake of it? Sri Lanka played Maharoof/Perera as their 5th bowler, never helped them in the recent series.

only if we are down in the series we take such chances until then 4 is fine. Remember even English have 4 bowlers. Anderson is as breakable as zack. Sreesanth comes in for Zack if he is out.

The first point I certainly admit is a problem. We won't get 20 wickets without 5 bowlers.

The English bowlers are better, fitter and stronger than the Indian bowling lineup. There shouldn't be a problem accepting that. So 4 bowlers will do for them.

We won't tinker to that extent. Most we will see is Yuvi as 5th bowler..
Bringing in UV at whose expense? We should rather have real openers in Mukund and Ganbhir unless Sehwag makes a return which I highly doubt (no match practice at all). The 5 bowlers option is the only one which gives us the chance of taking 20 wickets on the remaining 3 pitches.

In England 6 batsmen is a Suicide for us..........we will have to rely on batting them out.....i hope Zaheers injury isnt that serious.
4 of the remaining bowlers is also suicide because the English batting line up is pretty strong. I trust our middle order more than the 4 bowlers. Now tell me what you think?

I don't know, guess it would be Raina. Doubt it would happen in any case and wouldn't want it to tbh. Can't remember the last time it was considered feasible to go 6+5, must have been the odd occasion when Pathan played. Dhoni has been ordinary with the bat lately too.

Adding volume to mediocrity does not add quality to mediocrity.
Indeed. You couldn't be more on the money there. However, you have six bowlers selected to represent India as the best in the nation, do you honestly then say that five of them are unfit to be in the playing XI?

I do admit that it is huge gamble but what are the other options considering the remaining 3 pitches are most likely to yield a result barring poor weather.

It's not like these weather conditions are challenging that the work load needs to be shared to prevent injuries. Do you seriously think if Munaf or Sreesanth were bowling today the score would have been any different? On the other hand, the extra batsman can actually make a difference and has in the past - be it saving or winning a test. To have Dhoni batting at number 6 outside the subcontinent is a joke I rather not witness.

I am a big fan of playing 5 bowlers, esp. considering how strong our batting is but on this occassion I would go in with 4 because: a) Sehwag isn't playing (so the batting is not the same) b) I would play 5 bowlers (preferably with one of them being a bowling all-rounder) to give variety to the bowling attack, say 3 seamers (which is a must unless a turner) and 2 spinners. But here (in these conditions and looking at the form of bowlers) I am not sure how effective a 2nd spinner / 4th seamer would be. If the conditions help seamers a lot, then go in with 4, drop the spinner who is likely to bowl darts anyways. Key is the performances of Mukund. If he looks the part then he stays, if not then Yuvi can come in. His spin might be useful in the 2nd innings, esp if there is rough created. Given the circumstances and assuming Yuvi can be brought in: - Dravid (would need to open) - GG - Tendulkar / Laxman - Laxman / Tendulkar - Raina - Yuvi - Dhoni - Bhajji - Zak (if injured then get someone like Aroun or Yadav) - Sree - Ishant

Having Sreesanth as well in the attack might have made a difference. Although I agree that he is a volatile bowler at best. But then the simple reality is that without ZAK we won't get 20 wickets whether we bowl 4 or 5 bowlers.

However my faith on numbers 1, 3,4 and 5 is enormous. I believe that they can cover for this.
