Based on relative (relativeto rest of world) popularity of Chess in India, I believe Vishy could have inspired few players to get pro. AIMO Longetivity in chess shoulnt be compared to that of longetivity in sports. People are allready arguing about COUCH nature of chess. Chess in India has actually shot up after Anand's meteoric rise. Koneru Humpy, even though she has yet to win a WWCC has attained the 2nd highest rating in history among female players(2623) after Judit Polgar, Dronavali Harika is still very young and is a potential WC in the future. Among men we have decent players but being at Kasparov/Anand level requires much more talent. Sasikiran had a great start to his career but then lost motivation after a few bad tourneys. Harikrishna is good.Negi has faded quickly. Even the Chinese who have chess as a subject in most of their schools and a terrific chess programme with Government support have failed to produce a single top 15 player in history. And Vishy does inspire his fellow Indians. He makes it a point to call young prospects(eg IM Gopal) before big tourneys and gives them pointers. He also conducts many training sessions across the country for chess enthusiasts.

Sachin sould get the award but not when he is still playing but after he has retired and definitely not ahead of so many sproting icons of the nation. If the criterion has been changed now, let the other past sporting greats be awarded first. There are a number of legends who got the award years after they had stopped being the best in their chosen professions. And while the debate lingers on, I was shocked to find that Homi Bhabha, the father of nuclear energy in India, is yet to be awarded the highest civilian honour. He doesn't have a political group backing him and hence him missing out doesn't make the headlines. Sachin is the Greatest Cricket Icon of All-times , a living legend , World class by all standards . Was Kapil Dev even a world class All Rounder or just someone good enough to look great in a team of losers ? Like Andho main Kaana Raaja. The arguement that Kapil won India a world cup hence deserves Bharat Ratna is completely flawed , no single member can win his country anything in Cricket . Dev Contributed and so did others , if quality of performance in the most crucial matches is taken into consideration then Mohinder Amarnath deserves it more than Dev, sounds ridiculous but thats how it will be .

On a serious note, if there's an award and it keeps a few ppl employed (on committee's etc.) then there's no big deal about who gets it and what's the criteria.... eventually, all of them are recognitions for achievements and not that these guys need more of it, but does it really negatively impact anyone? I would just look at it as an encouragement and hopefully more ppl from India get inspired and make our nation proud.

I think they all had to do engineering becausetheir dad was standing behind him with a stick. As a kid how many times I had to hear below statement.... Kheloge Koodege hoge kharab Padhoge likhoge banoge Nawab I infact personally know some kid(district school level champ) whose parent are so much against him racing marathon that they did not pay for treatment to his foot hoping that this may deter his ambition as marathon runner
