NEW DELHI: Supporting the sports ministry's demand to include 'sports' as a category for the award of Bharat Ratna, the home ministry has written to the PM's office asking it to take the call as the decision would help outstanding sportspersons be considered for the country's highest civilian award. "Home ministry supports the view of the sports ministry and has therefore recommended it to the PMO for a final decision," said an official. At present, Bharat Ratna is awarded for "exceptional service towards advancement of art, literature and science, and in recognition of public service of the highest order". The recommendations for the Bharat Ratna, which was instituted in 1954, are made by the PM to the President. Though names of persons as per the sanctioned categories can be recommended by anyone to the PMO for consideration, no "formal recommendation" for this are necessary. It is also not mandatory that the Bharat Ratna is awarded every year. The number of awards is, however, restricted to a maximum of three in a particular year. So far, the award has been conferred on 41 personalities. As the clamour for awarding Bharat Ratna to Sachin Tendulkar gets louder, the sports ministry had recently written to the MHA seeking inclusion of 'sports' as a category for the award of Bharat Ratna. The sports ministry did not plead for any specific sportsperson or sports. On Tendulkar's case, sports minister Ajay Maken had said: "I would be pleased if any sportsperson gets a Bharat Ratna. If Sachin gets it, I will be happy. " Times View If anybody could be described as a jewel of India, which is what Bharat Ratna means, Sachin Tendulkar qualifies. He is universally acknowledged to be one of the greatest of all time in his chosen profession. What more can be demanded by way of eligibility. The problem clearly is that the current criteria make it impossible to give him the award. It has been suggested that this should be dealt with by including sports as a category. We disagree. Rather than have categories, the criteria should simply say anybody who has served India with extraordinary distinction or has made us proud to be Indians should be eligible. At the same time, to prevent misuse of the awards for patronage, there should be a genuinely independent panel of eminent people of unquestioned integrity to recommend names for Bharat Ratna. Link

before sachin vishy Anand deserve the Bharat ratna most.
Agree 100% Despite all Sachin's great achievements, he still chose the cash-rich IPL over playing for India in WI (note: he doesn't have a shortage of cash by any means). I would not give Bharat Ratna to Sachin. Vishy Anand, Abhinav Bindra deserve it more.

Agreed. Anyone who plays for IPL to make more cash and skips a test series because the excuse is that "I am a senior player, and I need rest from cricket. Therefore, I won't play in the next test series" does NOT deserve a Bharat Ratna award. Wait for another 5-7 years before giving Sachin a Bharat Ratna. Keep making him wait.

Sachin, Dhyan Chand now eligible for Bharat Ratna CNN-IBN | 16-Dec 09:11 AM New Delhi: Sports heroes Sachin Tendulkar and Dhyan Chand are now eligible for the Bharat Ratna as the government has changed the eligibility criteria for the Bharat Ratna to widen its scope. The Bharat Ratna category has been broadened and excellence in all fields of human endeavour is the new eligibility norm. The Prime Minister's Office has accepted the Ministry of Home Affairs' recommendation of broad basing the Bharat Ratna category. The change in rules came at the behest of the Sports Ministry. The country's highest civilian award was initially restricted to fields such as Art, Literature, Science and Public Service. Reacting to the government's move, Sports Minister Ajay Maken tweeted, "Bharat Ratna for any sportsperson would be a big big day for Indian Sports!" The Home Ministry had spoken to the Prime Minister's Office recommending that sports be made a category for conferring the Bharat Ratna. It's not just Sachin Tendulkar but even our politicians who are hoping to hit a sixer. The demand for a Bharat Ratna for Sachin is becoming louder and now government sources say that it could be a matter of time before he gets the nation's highest award. Maken had recently written to the Home Ministry pushing for Bharat Ratna for cricketer Sachin Tendulkar after calls came from several quarters to felicitate the master blaster. Sachin's name for Bharat Ratna started doing the rounds just before the world cup 2011 but it was felt that it would be too early to give it to him. And also with only arts, literature and public service as criteria, a sportsman would not find place. Ajay Maken had then pushed for a sports category. Former Olympians Leslie Claudius and Gurbax Singh had also said that they feel the legendary Dhyan Chand did not get his due in India and demanded a joint Bharat Ratna for the Hockey wizard, along with champion cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. "It is true that Dhyanchand did not get his dues in the country but that's how Hockey administration is in India. It is regretful," Leslie Claudius, who is a three-time Olympic gold medalist (London 1948, Helsinki 1952 and Melbourne 1956) had said. He was also the member of silver medal winning Indian team at Rome Olympic in 1960. He was in the national team when Dhyanchand was coach in 1959.

Dude are you for real? Sachin picking and choosing of matches actually give youngsters a chance to cement their places in the team and get international exposure. He also benifits by getting rest. Do you want him to keep on playing and suddenly retire one day without a proper backup? If we need Sachin even against West indies what chances do we have for the future? Are you seriously trying to imply that Sachin was needed in the West Indies? And if the team did not need him, why not give youngsters a chance? When the team needed him he played two days after his father's death, thats the kind of commitment he has Throughout his career Sachin has shown time and again how commited he is. He has played through injuries, through match-fixing scandals, after his father's death. He has done it consitantly for twenty years. Yet we have people like you who want to twist everything to slur him. Something which is actually benifitting for the team and, both BCCI and Sachin have the vision to realise this, is being used to attack him? How low can you fall?

you think the bcci will have their star name sit out of IPL? The top indians players are pressured by the BCCI to play in the IPL. Think about it this way, which raises more revenue for the BCCI, IPL or WI tour

It is great that Sachin will be awarded the country's highest civilian award for entertaining all of us by hitting a leather ball with a block of wood . I hope ALL Sports are included without prejudice ..including Video games. we all look forward to the day when somebody receives the highest civilian award for being the best in Quake 4 & counter strike.
