Anyhow, this thread is primarily about test cricket and Dhoni is a FTB and mediocre wicketkeeper in tests regardless how many billboards his hype machines put across the country. As Bumble said today, he would not rank even in the top 6 wicketkeepers playing the game today out of 9 test playing nations.

I drive around Lucknow, Varanasi, and Delhi and I see Dhoni staring down on me when I am trying to find out which road I am on. Dhoni? Seriously? WTF? At least the earlier mania we had in the cricketing nation was about top quality cricketers like Gavaskar, Kapil, Tendulkar. Dhoni? WTF! The guy is a hack of a wicket keeper - the only reason he doesn't have a Kamran Akmal kind of record of dropped catches is that he does not even attempt them to drop them. His batting? WTF kind of a hack is he masquerading as a batsman. His media pull has even persuaded the supposed cricket literates to nominate him in an all time Indian XI - the guy would not last 20 deliveries against Akram, Waqar, and Saqlain. But yeah, he gave the great photo op to the morons of the country in the WC final after Gambhir and Kohli had done all the hard work. OMG OMG, he hit a six to win the WC. It's not just this forum which has descended to mediocrity, it's the average Indian who worships mediocrity. Also when I layed in to Dhoni for missing SL test series ie resting in tests but not IPL. And also layed in to him as over hyped test player. You layed in to me and slaughtered me relentlessley. Looks like as the years have gone by, you actually now agee with me after all. The game was in balance after lose of Kohli, with Murli still having most of his over. We know how welll Yuvi plays murli. What matters are results and attitude.Dhoni might not be a cricket player of pedigree but he is cool,calculating and a completely natural and talented athlete.He is a born leader and anything but mediocre. Other teams rave about how lucky we are to have him and yet we have someone from our own who has no respect for him. What a Shame! Dhoni rules,OK?

I am not judging the team on 3 days - in fact said in my OP that the old guard can still save the test and even the series. But what next? There is no transition plan, no one from the new guard has risen to the occasion despite being dealt with kiddy gloves. Sure, Dravid, Laxman, Tendulkar, Gambhir can save us the test tomorrow but how long can they do it when half the time the BCCI does not leave them in good shape to play tests and our spin cupboard is bare?

I am not saying replace Dhoni, he is still probably the best option as a combination of captain, keeper, and lower order batsman, but to bring into perspective that in the global scheme of things he is nothing more than a FTB and mediocre wicketkeeper.

I was furious with dhoni for missing that test series and still am. But I repeat got hammered at time. The years have shown my worries were correct:--D

I am not asking him to be dropped right away or anything like that. I am saying that considering his batting and wicketkeeping skills he is not a test match player and should normally not be there. However he has excellent management skills and he is a gritty chap which is why he is in there. This taking India to the top in test cricket is a myth. The ball had been rolling for a while and the whole team contributed to get us there.
