punjabiplaya Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 India is all but out of the Test and at best can salvage a draw, which would feel like a win for India. England holds all the cards and India will need to bat out of their skin to earn the draw. With that in mind India's best bet is to force England to bat for as long as possible and will need to slow down things a bit. There are 196 overs left in the game yet (98 for each of the remaining 2 days - 8 overs added per day due to rain on Day 1). England would ideally like to score quick runs and let India bat for 130 overs or so to get a target of 400 or thereabouts. With no rain predicted over the next couple of days India should get defensive and revert back to the ploy which worked so well against Aussies in 2008, i.e. 8-1 field and bowl wide outside of off. If Eng try to force the pace they run the risk of throwing their wkts else the RR will be low. Essentially India should try to force England to bat 75-80 overs to score 200 odd runs needed to set India a target of 400 which would leave India around 116 overs to bat, which is difficult but doable. I was surprized Dhoni didn't revert to these tactics when England were 300 odd for 5 with Zaheer out of the match and India already in a position of not winning the game. If Dhoni had slowed the things down England would have needed to bat at least 20 more overs than they did in the first innings. Hope Dhoni doesn't repeat the same mistake and look to play for the draw. excellent post,its common sense,bowl maidens and have 10 overs where they score at 2 an over! time waste,8-1 field like we did against the aussies,if we draw this test match then we will have a good chance to win the series,i will even be happy with a drawn series especially after the first 3 days showing,but being a optimist im hoping for a draw, we come away with confidece and play like we fans expect them too!
Sid Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 Even I agree,Dhoni should have been little positive against Trott and Swann and should have looked to get more runs out of them. Sometimes I feel Dhoni gets confused in a test match what to do,to play his shots or just look to shut shop and stay there.I like the way he played in Centurion last year ,always looking to play his strokes.I hope next innings onwards along with trying to stay out there,he also looks for some strokes. Having said that ,his partnership with Dravid was crucial but it ended at wrong time :((

Dhoni is facing a one-match Test ban unless his team manages to increase their bowling over-rate in the ongoing Lord’s Test against England. The International Cricket Council (ICC) code of conduct states that the captain of any team which is found guilty of bowling slow over-rates on three occasions in a 12-month period will face a one-match suspension. Playing for a draw is the best thing.
Temujin Khaghan Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 england leading by 238 with 9 wickets in hand and 84 overs remaining in hte day's play. even if they hit 50 @ 3 = 150... they will have a lead of 380-400. india will have to survive for atleast 130 overs then. smthg interesting - if my guess is right, strauss wont touch 400... 1) sehwag is not there 2) he might want to just tempt indian batsmen in aggressive shots to pitched up swinging deliveries. strauss is in a very confident mood right now and there is nothing to be surprised if he sets an out of the blue 350 to win in 145 overs. leave the best batting team all time in this decade, even the minnows will fancy chasing that. winning at lords is special.

He will have to be careful or he will be sitting out the next test When I mentioned slowing things down I was referring to the scoring rate, not the over-rate. I still don't think our batting performance was that bad. If you saw, ball was swinging all day. Other lesser teams would have folded under 200. We could have scored 20-30 runs more had Dhoni taken some iniative when Trott and Swann were bowling before the 2nd new ball. Those 30 extra runs means 6 to 7 overs of difference for us in 2nd dig. I was really pI$ with the approach before the 2nd new ball. We would have to face 110 overs. If there is cloud cover will be very very hard to save this one. If no cloud cover, we would save this easily. Remember pitch doesn't crumble at Lords, its always overhead conditions. You make a pretty good point and I agree with you that despite most of our batsmen not scoring plenty our total wasn't that bad for the conditions. If Zaheer hadn't been injured I suspect even Eng would have scored round about 300-350 mark, not much more. People are getting a distorted view of the match and team strengths based on Zaheer's injury which was the real turning point of the game, and possibly the series.
