Cricket Question- Batting/Bowling_Offende/defense

Guys I have always wrestled with this question. What is offense/defense in cricket, bowling or batting. This is a serious question and expect all the experts/gurus/maharathis to give their opinion.

Harbhajjan was on the offense when he slapped Sreesanth. When the BCCI/ IPL fined him Rs 3 crores, he was the defendant. Geddit? :P

In bowling when bowlers bowl with 3 slips and two gully and such kind of fild, it called attacking bowling. Likewise a spinner bowling with a forward shorleg, backward shortleg, silly point, leg slip, slips, gully etc...the bowling is attacking. When the field is spread and the bowler bowls wide and doesn't attack the stumps, and bowls negatively ( prime example, Giles bowling to Sachin in Bangalore in 2001), it is called defensive bowling where captain wants to contain the batsmen more than taking their wickets. I hope it is clear somewhat!

In ODI/T20 cricket I would say it is easy. Batting is offense, bowling and fielding (or 'defending' a target, 'restricting' the opposition) is defense. Tests is tougher. There is no fine line. Depends on the situation of the game.

Thanks for the response. That is why I am not clear what is offense or defense in cricket is . It could go either way.

When you are looking for wickets, it is attacking bowling. The field is attacking, your line and length is attacking when you bowl. (be it a spinner or pacer) When you are looking to restrict scoring, that is defensive bowling tactics. Get wickets perhaps by attrition/boredom. This approach can sometimes work against Sehwag type batsmen.

Part of me thougt bowling is defending but I cannot disagree with you either that bowling can be attacking.
