EnterTheVoid Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 My flight from Malaysia to India ran into a lightning storm. Pitch dark and flying over water, I notice violent lightning strikes in the near distance. Not one or two strikes, but prolonged lightning strikes over a 20 minute period. Managed to capture a part of the storm on video, shown in the following video. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1yTpjlHCV4]Lightning Storm from Flight - YouTube[/ame]
punjabi_khota Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 50K feet...thats real high for a commercial plane.
EnterTheVoid Posted September 6, 2011 Author Posted September 6, 2011 Added the video -- check it out in 720P Its as authentic as it gets -- You can clearly hear the droning noise of the engines, the white lightning strikes in the background and me and nearby passengers conversing about it.
kabira Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 Lightning happens at 50K feet?? I thought they are not that high.
Anonymous Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 50K feet...thats real high for a commercial plane. Yeah the highest most go is around 40K feet IIRC. Adventure seems to follow you sree !
EnterTheVoid Posted September 6, 2011 Author Posted September 6, 2011 Lightning happens at 50K feet?? I thought they are not that high. No, the plane flew at 50, 000 feet. The lightning strikes were thousands of feet below -- I was able to film them because the plane was thousands of feet above the clouds. You can clearly see the strikes from where I was filming.
EnterTheVoid Posted September 6, 2011 Author Posted September 6, 2011 By far the scariest thing that's happened to me. Lightning storm, pitch dark, flying over water ... what the eff man, why me :((

EnterTheVoid Posted September 7, 2011 Author Posted September 7, 2011 As for the flight altitude, well, that's what the pilot said it was over intercom He probably meant 40, 000 feet.
Roshanrocks Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 @sree I can barely make out anything in your video, but I bet the view with the naked eye must have been awesome. I always wished to see thunder and lightning while i travelling by flight but no luck so far. the most I have experienced so far has been severe turbulence.
EnterTheVoid Posted September 7, 2011 Author Posted September 7, 2011 @sree I can barely make out anything in your video' date=' but I bet the view with the naked eye must have been awesome.[/quote'] Watch the video in 720P in full screen and you can see the lightning strikes.
