Your manager would know anyway. Depending upon what kind of relationship you have with your manager, you can share your ambition/goals with her, may be she can give you more options. Quite often one has a very rosy perception about the new role/team ( grass is greener). May be she can tell you something more about the other team. But there is a possibility that if you are a key resource of the team, she would first try to sell you the option of staying back. In either case - I would say - go ahead and discuss with her - if she is overly pushy about staying back, or overly supportive about your move ( cribbing about -ives in the current team/business unit) - in other words pushing her decision on you - then most likely it is the time to move. Not very common scenario in India - but, if she give you objective assessment of leaving and staying back - in terms of pros/cons of both situations and leaves the decision with you - then there is a strong reason to stay back. And also explore other options where you can pursue your career objectives w/o leaving the team.

...This is for a job within the same company. I just applied for another role, I have NOT told my current manager that I have done so. Thinking, I have only applied, let us see if it even get to interview stage and I shall tell her then. I get on well with my manager and a huge amount of respect for her. Have I played it right? Should I tell her if I do get called for interview, or not even then? Bearing in mind it is internal its not bad, i.e Im not keen on leaving the company, and they are big on internal promotions/movement
She would know about it sooner than later. Someone may reach out to her to get feedbck on you, for example. Better you include her on this. It is always nice to have your immediate superior have confidence and trust in you. its tough to build once its gone. Plus you will have to have the conversation, might as well do it now.
