Trichromatic Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Hate mail: Digvijay approaches cops NEW DELHI: Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Thursday approached the Delhi Police with a complaint against the hate mail, objectionable pictures and abusive comments posted ahainst him on social networking sites. He named 22 people and eight websites. Sources said some people have used "defamatory language against Singh or have posted phrases talking about his character". In his complaint, Digvijay Singh said the content on the internet has caused "acute mental pain and agony to him, his family members, friends and colleagues. The same is also causing grave damage and injury to the reputation, goodwill and image of the Congress". The police have filed an FIR under section 66 of the Information Technology Act. While I agree that action should be taken against the hate mails, but I'm not sure what's objectionable content other websites need censoring. Some day it might lead to censoring of any content which is against an individual or group based on personal opinions rather than exact proof. For ex, once someone posted on ICF that Chidambaram may look like a good leader, but he is very corrupt. Could new laws stop us from posting even those comments in future? I think if we start taking actions against so called inappropriate comments then it might happen. If someone thinks Digvijay's comments are highly objectionable, they can go to court. The fact remains that people do make highly inappropriate comments on the internet. Posting a comment on a social network website is the same as making a public statement. If they have made statements that are inappropriate in nature, they have to face the consequences.
