This is funny' date=' make up your own mold to make sure that Sachin doesn't fit. :haha:[/quote'] LOL Exactly Seeing the number of areas Sachin fails in, its unbelievable how idiotic we are to think he is any good. All he has is numbers

Regardless of what stats say Laxman has played lot more valuble 2th innings than Sachin Not just Sachin he has played more great 2th innings than all our other batter combined. And more often than not he played those knocks with the tail which makes it even more special. Its not just the 281 or his knock in durban but the knock in Perth when he guided India to a match winning target in Perth along with RP singh or his knock in Mohali along with ishant his partnership with Zaheer in Johenesburg which we lost. And plenty more which cant simply be measured in runs.He not only have score runs but also ensure others didnt lose their wickets either because he always have to score these runs with tail enders to company.
And as I said many times here he deservedly has the most unique initials in all of sports embedded into his name VVS - Very Very Special. Thank You Ian Chappell for coming up with that one.

This is funny' date=' make up your own mold to make sure that Sachin doesn't fit. :haha:[/quote'] Yeah, what a dumb criteria to measure an innings greatness by how others did on the same pitch. Must be dumb because lo behold nothing from Tendulkar qualifies to the same level as Laxman's 96.

Yup that was discussed a few times here. In fact VVS had the top 2 scores for the match 96 and 38 till Price I think almost at the end of the game got to 39. Remarkable indeed when you see that a total of 40 wickets fell and only one batsman scored 40 or more in the entire game which is 96 by VVS.
But, but, but Tendulkar's century at Cape Town was better. Well, why? Because it was played by Tendulkar. Never mind the fact that Kallis scored two hundreds in the same test and Gambhir almost got a century of his own in addition to scoring another 50 in the second innings.

Too bad that Goddy has never dominated a test by country miles like Laxman did at Durban. :((
too bad when he got out after making a spectacular 136 at chennai, the remaining 3 wickets could score only 4 runs between them.........................but of course all that does not matter because India lost the match and so the innings is not even worthy of being mentioned!!!

So, yeah regardless of the result the innings is not in the same league as Laxman's. Want tissues? :((

Though the greatness of Laxman's Eden and Mohali knock cannot be denied under any circumstances, the criteria that a knock to be considered great has to be highest score of the match (and way higher than every other knock) is patently absurd.

Can you tell me why it's absurd to consider an innings' greatness relative to how others did on the same pitch in the same match?

What's the harm in accepting that VVS is a better 2nd innings batsman than Sachin? Sachin has himself played some amazing knocks in the 2nd innings but VVS has perhaps surpassed him especially after his effort sin the last 12-18 months. Doesn't take anything away from Sachin's greatness and adds to the aura of VVS.

However, if a batsman is outperforming everyone else to the extent that Laxman's 96 did (and this was in a game involving two strong batting line-ups) then it definitely stands out more than a hundred in a game where others also made hundreds. That doesn't mean that hundred couldn't have been a fine innings, of course. Apart from Laxman's 96, another such innings is Sehwag's 201* at Galle - the next highest score by anyone was Jayawardene's 86.

I have no issues in accepting that VVS has played more valuable innings in the 2nd innings of a match than SRT. My issue was with the additional criteria that a knock has to be highest of the match in order to qualify as great.

Nah. You can keep them for your use when he is universally acknowledged as the greatest cricketer ahead of Bradman...............that day will come soon :)

Lara's 153 was such a poor knock given that SR Waugh had scored 199 in the first inning and Ricky Ponting & Sherwin campbell also scored centuries in it
Poor knock? No, neither was Tendulkar's 136 but yeah definitely below Laxman's 96. It involves something very special to outscore every batsman in the match by a huge distance specially when the teams were boasting line ups which included the likes of Tendulkar, Dravid, Kallis, Sehwag, Smith, Amla, DeVilliers.

No one said that the innings has to be the highest score of the match to be considered great. But yeah, between two innings played against good bowling attacks in difficult conditions logic dictates that extra weight should be given to the one which was by far the highest score of the match.

Bit what's absurd is some one eyed Sachin fans cant simply see the difference in quality of the Laxman's 281 or 96 with Sachin's 136.Not all great innings are of the same quality.U know it isnt absurd to acknoledge that Laxman have played knock of higher quality than sachin. And what better way is there to measure the greatness of a quality knock by measuring how other players fared on the same pitch?
