Mullaperiyar dam: High alert in Idduki A high alert has been issued in Idduki as the water level in Mullaperiyar dam on Monday crossed 136 ft, the maximum permissible storage limit. All the shutters of the dam have been opened and water is flowing to the Idukki dam and to other dams of the district like Cheruthni and Kulamavu. On Monday morning, the water level reached 136.6 ft causing serious concern over the safety of the 116-year-old dam. It is also spilling over five out of the 13 spillways and rising every hour as heavy rain continues in most parts of the district. Thousands of residents in the downstream of the dam like Chappath, Upputhara, Kumili, Kattappana and Vandanmedu are a worried lot. The district authorities had set up disaster management units. District collector E Devadasan said all arrangements had been made to meet any emergency situation. Meanwhile, the hartal called by both the United Democratic Front and Left Democratic Front was total in the district and there is now a strong agitation to de-commission the dam immediately and construct a new one. The BJP has called for a 12-hour hartal in Idukki, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Alappuzha districts tomorrow (November 29). Thousands of people including women and children blocked the Kollam-Theni national highway and other roads. Effigies of Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa were burnt at several places. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying pilgrims to Sabarimala, were held up in the blockade for several hours. The political leadership is holding discussions in Delhi and Kerala to solve the issue.

MGKStLmYUOg DIrector's interview in Rediff: http://www.rediff.com/movies/interview/dam-999-has-nothing-to-do-with-politics/20111128.htm

Are you moving court against your film's ban in Tamil Nadu? I don't want to do that. Let the people in the rest of the country watch it. All the misconceptions will be cleared. We were ready with our legal advisers to go to the Supreme Court. How do you respond to the ban on your film in Tamil Nadu? It's very sad that this should happen in a state where politics and cinema are so closely connected. There are so many eminent politicians from cinema in Tamil Nadu. They should understand the medium and people like us who go through so many hardships to make a film. The Tamil Nadu government feels your film might create disturbances in the state and harm its relations with Kerala [ Images ]? My film has nothing to do with politics! It isn't meant to disrupt the harmony in the state or hurt the feelings of Tamilians. The saddest part of the issue is that they've imposed the ban without seeing my movie. At least they should see the film and then if they feel if it's not in Tamil Nadu's interests then we're ready to make the changes they want, or even agree not to screen the film in the state. Have you tried screening the film for Tamil politicians? My team has been in Tamil Nadu and Delhi [ Images ] for some days now. The film has already been censored and passed. It has been reviewed by the Censor Board two-three times already. They've give it a clean chit. What more do they (the Tamil politicians) want? But even the '999' in the title seems to refer to Tamil Nadu's 999-year lease of the Mullayaperiyar dam? That's the date of the dam's collapse in my film, September 9, 2009. Once the Tamil Nadu government gets a feedback from the rest of the country where the film was released , they will know my film has nothing to do with politics, Tamil or otherwise. We understand the sentiments of Tamil Nadu. They're being goaded by political leaders.

Has anyone else seen Tehri Dam ? (SJ must have). Before I actually saw that, I used to think - how can it take away with it, plain cities like Hardwar and around. But after seeing it, I felt may be even Delhi is not safe. And, videos and pictures do not do justice to the actual magnitude. If one has a choice between visiting Taj or Tehri - I would recommend Tehri. Seeing it in real life, gives an awkward and weird feeling about balance of Engineering and Nature's power.

old ,but

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to advise Kerala not to build a new dam in place of Mullaperiyar Dam, as it was functioning and also because the whole issue was before the Supreme Court and the Empowered Committee. She requested him to advise Kerala “not to whip up fear and panic among the people to gain political mileage”. In a letter to Dr.Singh released to the media here, Ms. Jayalalithaa requested him to advise Kerala to honour the rights guaranteed to Tamil Nadu under the 1886 Agreement followed by the Supplemental agreements of 1970 in letter and spirit. Besides, she wanted the Kerala government to abide by the Supreme Court order dated February 27,2006, allowing the raising of the dam's storage height to 142 feet. She said it was reported in the media that Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy had met the Prime Minister and represented that the construction of a new dam would be the only solution to safeguard the people of Kerala. “The Apex Court in unambiguous terms had concluded that the dam is safe and the Government of Tamil Nadu had already taken safety measures to keep the dam in as good condition as a new dam,” she said. “The Tamil Nadu Government is also concerned about the safety of all inhabitants downstream of Mullaperiyar Dam and is doing and will do all that is necessary to ensure that the dam remains safe,” she promised.

typical tamilian response' date='they have no concern about about neighboring states as long as their state is well fed.[/quote'] That's like P@kis calling Indians terror sponsors. :winky:

Doesn't make sense. Which neighboring state is causing trouble to TN?
indeed.you can see that keralities are really afraid of the the old dam and this is the response we expect from tamilnadu even though kerala has promised not to divert water by using the new dam.

??? Supreme Court, Cauvery,... ring a bell? On the contrary, let's see what the Supreme court directive is in this case:
In 2006, the Supreme Court of India has allowed for the storage level to be raised to 142 feet (43 m). Tamil Nadu insists that the non-implementation of Supreme Court Order to increase water level by Kerala is the first issues tobe tackled.
One common theme here is this. TN has two neighbors who don't even respect the laws of the land and are willing to give the finger to the Supreme Court. Currently, TN is contesting a Supreme Court decision (legally) to form a new committee to study the issues and it lost the appeal. The central govt now has to provide funds for this committee. I personally feel that they should go ahead with forming of the committee and study the issues and come to a fair conclusion which takes care of farmers on TN side and any safety issue on the Kerala side. As far as current levels, they are well below the level established by the Supreme Court and a 3.8 Richter scale AFAIK is nothing to be worried about. Yes there are predictions for a potential 6.5 in that area, which doesn't mean you suddenly deny farmers the water they need without studying potential solutions. Current hysteria seems like more fear mongering than anything else to me. Yes the dam is more than 100 years old and has cracks, so something has to be done.

they should build a new dam if there is even a chance that it might fail, you can never predict when earthquakes occur.we had an earthquake in Oklahoma which registered almost 6 on the richter even though the region is not seismically active or known for earth quakes.

If a new one is built, Kerala will control it. Given how we had to struggle with Karnataka and Cauvery water despite Supreme directives, you can see why TN doesn't want to accept the proposal. All this mess is because we have states who can't trust each other and won't even follow SC orders when disputes arise.

So' date=' TN is innocent as a baby in the cauvery issue?[/quote'] AFAIK, SC kept issuing orders and KN kept refusing to comply. They would release some and stop, get rebuke from SC and continue. TN kept going back to SC asking them to force KN to comply. Not sure what you think TN should have done, other than simply accept that KN wasn't going to respect the SC orders. I don't understand why they can't declare some of these inter-state assets as National and simply take the state governments out of the equation. Anytime you have two govts that have to agree on something which impacts one state and benefits the other, it is going to end in a dispute.

So, if TN farmers want more water because they do 3 crops year as opposed to 2 crops by KN farmers, KN has to follow the supreme court orders no matter what. Farmers in KN are committing suicide, it doesn't matter to TN as long as their farmers are not affected. Mettur dam is larger than KRS, so that it benefits TN farmers. So expecting more water to fill the bigger mettur at the sake of smaller KRS dam is ok as per TN people.

If we stop following laws because people are committing suicide then why even have a SC? Just see which side is capable of committing more suicides and decide on that basis. You think SC didn't consider all these issues (regarding #crops, etc)?
