As the title says.. what/how/where/how much/... - was some $$s you earned legally... proper paycheck in your name, not some chillar (non-trackable) pocket money. As for me: Class XI - a bunch of us students were invited to some quiz-programme on Radio - by Nazimabad(India) Radio Station (no, I am not from there). And as a compensation for our appearance, we were all paid a chqeue of Rs 100.00 !!!. Since the cheque was A/C-Payee, my father had to get a bank account opened to encash it. Which is why I consider it as my first 'paycheck'. P.S. Later, to keep it growing my father used to deposit 50/100 now and then (at best monthly).. but I don't even remember how much it grew upto, when I closed it finally. P.P.S. I even remember one of the question, quizzer asked - "What is the sweetest substance known to us".. and when someone answered "fructose".. I was like, "NO.. THIS IS WRONG". I used to read "Science Reproter" and remembered something like - "talin protein" - is 1000s times sweeter than sugar. So, naturally ( like any 'grown up' kid ) - I jumped in, and argued for a while. And they were like, there is no such thing by that name. I hope it was recorded and later edited..and not live :embarassed:.... ..........but.. today once again I stumbled upon this thing "Thaumatin", another name for "talin protein" and is indeed 2k times sweeter than sugar... definitely more than fructose. So - I was not wrong :yess:... hence the memories and this thread. Back to OP.. your first paychecks please..

REC Durgapur college fest and all the literary, quizzing activities. They had a policy of giving medallion and some cash. Which wasnt much at the time. 100 for 1st position and 50 and 25 for 2nd and 3rd...something like that. I ended up with a purse of about 350 or so..which was awesome back then. When we landed back at our college all the money was spent off eating and watching movies with friends. Those days of course all tabs was picked by one person..no seperate checks of course..

^@#3 :two_thumbs_up:.. Those 100/200 Rs prize money used make you feel rich!!! In one of our college fests I had already won carrom doubles and snooker singles, and my carrom doubles partner was sitting across the table for singles finals, for the prize money of some chillar.. and my partner was like - "yaar tujhe already 2 mil gaye hain, ye waala mujhe leney de"... Imagine that was for some 100/500 or something like that!!

hahaha funny one Akshay..strange but the first money I ever earned was exactly like yours.. I came in 2nd in Haryana in a science/general competetion back in 2003 ...Got 2000 rupees off the then chief minister and paneerpakodas :D while waiting in that ceremony.. my school used to send me for all these comptetions but that was the first time I ever 'earned' cash... though 2 days later, I moved to Canada for good and never used that money haha.. My first paycheque in canadian dollars though when I worked as Co-op elec engineer in first year of ECE.. 25$/Hr = 1600/biweeklly after taxes..it was a heaven back then!!

All I got was Maggi schoolbags for the quizzes. No cash prize
man.. good one.. looks like I need to revise "my first paycheck".. Another quiz show, class 5th, I was sitting in audience.. and quizzer asked - "In which City one would see 'Gondolas' ". When participating teams failed to answer, host turned to audience - and I was quick to raise hands.. my heart was pounding out of anxiety, as host didn't pick me at first few attempts from audience.. .. finally when it came to me, I almost choked.. so I had to repeat couple of times "Venice madam..".. and the prize money was - "Maggi".. not any bag or something... actually smallest packet of Maggi.... And that was the first time I held Maggi in my hands (tab tak sab Ads mein hee dekha tha).. So when I brought it home, I had no idea how to cook it.. so me and my sister boiled it with milk and sugar (clue sevaiyaan..), and as far as i remember - it didn't taste that bad.

My parents gave me 1000 rupees for fixing a long wave radio over the summer after my class 9 exams - that's the most cherished 1000 rupees of my life because it made me realize how much I would hate to do a degree in engineering.

OK if the discussion changed to our first prizes, I won a prize as a baby in some well-baby contest. I won a thermos flask. P.S. What kind of a prize is a thermos-flask. Now that I think about it, how the hell did I win it. I have my baby pics, I was a skinny baby, was skinny for most part of my life. Maybe I was a runners-up or maybe they gave it to every baby that participated. I think my parents lied to me just so that I just feel good about myself. :(( I think its about time I asked my parents again about this. 20-odd years is long enough time to finally reveal the truth and also that now I am kind off chubby, i wont feel bad anymore.

Isn't it some form of nepotism.. would they have have paid similar amount to the hard-working-skilled-family-to-support repair-shop waala?.. esp when back in those times (IIRC) you would get a fresh radio for 1000 Rs. :headshake: and that too w/o receipt/records :winky:
