J P K Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Tillakaratne Dilshan has stepped down as Sri Lanka captain, a day after the ODI series against South Africa concluded. Dilshan took over as captain from Kumar Sangakkara after the 2011 World Cup and led his team's tours to England, the UAE and South Africa where Sri Lanka came out second best in both Tests and ODIs. Dilshan's own form with the bat dipped during his captaincy and despite a historic Test win in Durban, Sri Lanka's first on South African soil, the loss in the Test series as well as the five-match ODI series had him under pressure. Sri Lanka Cricket was expected to offer the captaincy to Mahela Jayawardene, who said he will take some time to think over it when the offer was made. Looks like he has been asked to resign by the sports minitser. yesterday he said he would lead the side again if he was asked to and that he will not quit unless he is asked to. Mahela is taking over, not sure how wise a move that is. Mahela himself has been struggling across formats ever since Dilshan took over.

What we need.[/quote'] I am not sure if a massive chop/change strategy ever helps. Gradual steps has benefited many a team and players.

Mind you, hadn't it been for a washout in the third ODI Sri Lanka may have just edged South Africa in the ODIs. In Test matches, they didn't really compete well enough. Dilshan doesn't really have the tactical nous too. A case in point was deciding to bowl on a flat pitch in the 3rd Test match. Anyways, one good thing would be he would concentrate on his ace quality : batting.

If it hadnt been a washout in the third and Saffers had lost, they wouldnt have rested key players for the final two matches

I think we need a drastic change, we failed to do any gradual phasing and now it has come to this. I would: Sack Fletcher and get someone like Steve Waugh. Get a bowling coach like Gillespie. Sack the selectors. I like the idea of a captain who is a selector too. Drop Laxman or give him a send off. Drop Ishant, VK and Mithun. New Captain-ZK or Sree in all formats of the game. Warning to Viru and Gauti to improve. I would keep this as the squad for the next few test series for stability: Mukund, Gauti, Viru, Pujara, Rohit, Kohli, UV, Dravid, Tendulkar, Dhoni, Kaul, Ashwin, Ojha, Yadav, Sree, ZK, PK, Dinda/Munaf

I only see schadenfraude in a few words being spoken here. Fletcher hasn't demonstrated he deserves a run. Look at how Lanka got rid of their coach after 2 series. Whatever Fletcher is doing at any level, has had NO IMPACT whatsoever. Simmons has done nothing, our bowlers still bowl at pads e.t.c. Well apart from ZK and Sree who else? Gauti and Viru are tactically naive and Viru is laid back. Both are also at risk of losing their position. Dravid is on verge of retirement and so is Tendu-not sure they would want it again anyway.

Angelo Mathews remains the vice-captain of the 15-member squad which also includes Dilshan. Jayawardene was ODI captain from 2004 till 2009 (he took over as Test captain in 2006). He resigned in 2009, saying he wanted his successor to have sufficient time to build the team for the 2011 World Cup. Kumar Sangakkara took over from Jayawardene but stepped down after leading Sri Lanka to the final of the World Cup. Dilshan led Sri Lanka for nine months after the World Cup, but resigned on Monday following series defeats in both Tests and ODIs in all his four assignments. Jayawardene has led Sri Lanka in 97 ODIs, winning 57 and losing 35. Whether Jayawardene is handed the Test captaincy as well remains to be seen; Sri Lanka's next Test series begins only in the last week of March against England at home. Farveez Maharoof, the bowling allrounder, and Chanaka Welegedara, the fast bowler, were recalled after having last played an ODI for Sri Lanka back in June 2010. The duo were the only changes from the squad for the recent ODI series in South Africa, in place of Kosala Kulasekara and Dilhara Fernando. Thilan Samaraweera, who was ignored for the South Africa ODIs, was put on stand-by. Maharoof was the leading run-scorer in Tier A of the 50-over domestic Premier Limited Over Tournament 2011-12 with 219 runs from six games at an average of 43.80 for the Nondescripts Cricket Club. He also picked up 10 wickets in the tournament at 17.00 and an economy rate of four. Welegedara has been a regular member of the Test side of late, and has now been rewarded with a place in the limited-overs squad as well. Rangana Herath and the offspinner Sachithra Senanayake, who debuted against South Africa recently, will form the spin attack. There was no place for Suraj Randiv, who last played an ODI against Australia in August 2011.
