Officials from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said an indigenously developed interceptor missile locked on to the targets, two nuclear-capable missiles, and destroyed them in a test in eastern India. DRDO spokesman Ravi Gupta said radars following the two destroyed missiles detected fragments falling into the Bay of Bengal off the state of Orissa. "India is the fifth nation to have these ballistic missile defence capabilities in the world," Gupta said in a statement. The test was carried out at a missile launch site located 200 kilometres (120 miles) from Orissa state capital of Bhubaneswar. Nuclear-armed Pakistan, with which India has fought three wars since their independence in 1947, has said New Delhi's missile programme could trigger a new arms race in the region. A similar test in 2010 by the DRDO was abandoned when radars following a "hostile" missile lost track of it after it blasted off from the launch site. The system's tracking and fire-control radars were developed by the DRDO jointly with Israel and France. India last month said it would soon test a nuclear-capable missile with a range of over 5,000 kilometres. India's current longest-range nuclear-capable missile, Agni-IV, can travel 3,500 kilometres.

From what I remember, when the US started testing the Patriot missile (which is meant to intercept incoming missile), they went through several failed attempts before it was declared a success. I hope this test was a real one and not some curve fitted attempt. If really successful, no doubt it can be a major major win for us and force rogue neighbors to show even more restraint.

I know its important to have an indigenous defense research industry, but there's no point investing 1000s of crores in developing weapons technologies that, by the time they come to fruition, are already out-dated. Its common knowledge that our army has been reluctant to deploy some of our most marquee weapons systems - There were several complaints about the Arjun Tank. The Tejas, for all its fanfare/publicity, has failed to get too much enthusiasm from the army/navy. Our biggest successes in terms of weapons development has been those projects that we have done in conjuntion with other established powers (The Brahmos, Sukhoi 30 MkI etc) We should puruse that model instead of doing indigenous weapons research just for the sake of it.
surajmal Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 6 successes and 1 failure so far. But the system is nowhere near ready. Gonna take another 7-8 years atleast for induction. Swordfish Radar will need revisions to be considered even in the same class as the US' THAAD Radar. Still, If there is one thing, you can say that DRDO is good at, It is making missiles. So, they should give us a solid ABM system in the end.

Less said about the armored corp, the better. There are so many vested interests in the army that indigenous systems will always be kicked to the curb in the intial go around (just read about their attitude towards Brahmos missiles in the initial phase of testing). Tejas got zilch support from the Airforce until the middle of 2000s. Its too bad, ADA/DRDO didn't hookup with the Navy from the get go because Navy is the only institution with a remote interest in increasing indigenous capabilities. Need to involve the Private sector (even though they have shown zero interest in R&D) because even if you concede that DRDO/ADA/HAL have the intellectual capacity to deliver required systems, as a government institution, they'll always lack a sound management structure. So, all projects will have cost over runs and delayed delivery.

DRDO had its confidence in the tank and challenged the armed forces on a duel with the T90. Tejas though has been nowhere as successful and the rate of progress for whatever reasons has been uninspiring.
hari504504 Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 The radar used is most definitely the Israeli Green Pine that we previously bought...what is the need to develop another one ??! .. and we've probably had significant input from Israel to develop something identical to the Arrow 2 inerceptor considering the US blocked its sale to us quoting MTCR
