ganeshran Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 But the similarities remain the same... Misbah couldn't score 1 off 2' date=' or 4 off 3 to win the games. Probably he chokes while playing against India. As for Dhoni he finishes the game even in T20 once he's in as he showed in 2nd T20I against Aus. T20 sample is quite small for Dhoni as India doesn't play too many T20Is but at IPl level he generally does the same but I don't want to include IPL stats in this thread.[/quote'] Not really. The two T20I matches where Misbah didnt get Pakistan over the line were very different from the matches that Dhoni finishes in the ODIs. They were late surges where people had written off Pakistan and Misbah was slogging at everything. When you play like that you are bound to get out sooner or later. IIRC Dhoni too lost in a T20 match against England by a small margin too where he wasnt able to finish it off. Regarding the ODIs, there is no contest and comparing finishers with Dhoni is setting the bar really high. But Misbah is a pretty decent player and doesnt crack/choke under pressure like is often made out to be. He has his limitations as a player though which are further accentuated by the brainlessness of the batsmen he has to bat with. The only two instances of Misbah unable to finish matches that I can recall are Mohali and today.

He was but he did get Pak into a position of scoring 1 off 2 balls with scores tied, and scoring 4 off 3 against a part-timer (Joginder Singh) and then threw it away. Can you honestly say Dhoni wouldn't have managed a win in either case? Fact is Misbah chokes when his team is near the finishing line after all the hard work is done, and he doesn't have the resilience or mental strength to pull his team to victory.

We lost by 3 runs with both Dhoni (and Pathan) at the crease. http://www.espncricinfo.com/wt202009/engine/match/356010.html
zep1706 Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 His inning in Mohali is by far the weirdest ODI inning I have ever seen. Couldn't really understand what was he trying to do.
Swing_n_Speed Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 ODI and T20's and captaincy - Dhoni is Misbah's baap. Test match cricket excluding test match captaincy - Misbah is Dhoni's baap. As a captain considering the fact he doesn't bowl or have the Dhoni like ability to "hit a six on demand" he needs to bat higher.

I haven't seen Misbah do anything great in Tests either to be deemed "Dhoni's baap". At home Dhoni is a pretty good batsman and will win everything. Away havn't seen Misbah o anything of note either.

We lost the game and tourney by batting Jaddu up the order. Jaddu couldn't hit anything off the square and the opponents were more than happy for Jaddu to stay at the wkt with guys like Yuvraj, Dhoni and Pathan in the dressing room  That was more poor captaincy than poor finishing skills from Dhoni.
vvvslaxman Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Misba tries to get as close as possible without taking too many risks. But unfortunately he either chokes or leaves it too late. He should target to finish the match one over before the close. That way he might win a match or two.

Then again the poor chap hardly ever played test cricket at home in his entire career. Anyways as a batsmen I find him to be a whole lot more compact. Boring yes. But almost (almost) reliably boring. Besides if u look at his 2011 record barring matches played against Zim, and Bang he was pretty consistent. This assumes a bit of significance when u realize these players have no home series. So I think on current form u gotta give Misbah a slight edge in tests. The who baap thingy is purely dramatic
Tendulkar_Bhai Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 The only differene: Dhoni get better assistance from other end... Misbah have always to do it single handedly... Not always, India's tail is rubbish apart from Ashwin who you cant rely to score runs.
Zelch Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Then again the poor chap hardly ever played test cricket at home in his entire career. This assumes a bit of significance when u realize these players have no home series. This whole thing of Dubai not being Paki Home series is trash. The wickets there were more spinner friendly than the ones in Pak. In Pak there would have been atleast one Patta match draw with each side scoring 500.
J P K Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 misbah > dhoni dhoni has just won one world-cup by his batting while misbah has won two for us

The who baap thingy is purely dramatic Now this I agree with, i.e. Dhoni >>>>>>Misbah in shorter formats whereas Misbah>Dhoni in Tests where each ">" signifies the gap between the two :winky: As for folks saying Misbah doesn't get enough support from his tail, have you seen our lower order and tail? Jaddu is a liability in a tight chase, Ashwin is the only chap Dhoni can rely on to stick around and our bowlers, i.e. Zak, Vinay, PK etc. are hardly world beaters and we all saw what they can do when they batted in Tests. In fact our lower order's incompetency is the reason Dhoni doesn't take too many risks and has become much more conservative taking the game right down to wire.

Blue-no1 Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 4 year old joke but still fresh: Knock knock who's there Misbah Misbah Who Misbah 5 runs, 29 runs, 30 runs take your pick

TheWall Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Dhoni < Misbah in losing close encounters...:hysterical:
skindia Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Dhoni's luck is better than misbah.....no ball at right time in many close encounters....perhaps dhoni believes in astrology and he knows what will happen next thats why he is so cool even after so many losses in tests...dhoni believes in luck thats why he always play vinay kumar and jadeja(both these players are lucky considering their bowling)
NareshK Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 From what I saw in the WC Semi Final and previous matches, he seems to either block and go on the defensive completely or otherwise go for the big shots and get out. It doesnt help that other batsmen in their lineup are crap and one of the worst in world cricket. Barring Younus who is only half decent, other batsmen are quite frankly not good enough and the less said about their tail the better.
