1983-2011 Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 am sure tendulkar will take less time than than to get his 100 http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/19296.html?class=2;filter=advanced;orderby=default;runsmin1=100;runsval1=runs;team=1;template=results;type=batting
gaurav92 Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 I hope that the cloud of 100th ton mounting on his head must have moved away. He shouldn't get pressurized by the situation now, its been almost a year and there can be no other reason why he is struggling at the moment. He needs a break for a week or so, freshen up his mind and come back not thinking of this 100. I know its difficult when you have got tremendous media pressure plus the expectations of people - but I am sure the maestro will be able to conquer this final frontier too.

Tendulkar_Bhai Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 He's had breaks throughout the year and it hasnt made a difference, though i dont think he is as out of form as people are saying its a collective team failure. Its better he's playing and focused instead of resting and being asked by everyone if the 100 is playing on his mind

How meaningful will the landmark be after the 0-8 disaster. Everytime someone talks of 100th 100, 0-8 will be brought up in the same breath. That landmark, once it arrives, will be as meaningless and hollow as they come and will be more of a back-handed compliment than anything else.

And in that case, every milestone reached by any other player would be pointless as we lost 8-0 and that fact will be brought out time and again. Defeats and humiliation are part and parcel of the game, but that doesn't mean we stop celebrating the landmarks and records we get on our way. And this magical number is the most awaited landmark in the history of not just Indian Cricket , but World Cricket, so I don't think it would mean less just because India have lost 8-0. Yes it would have been a completely different feeling had he got there in that series itself and with India winning it comprehensively ,but that is not to be.

You may celebrate the landmark but to me it would be as meaningless as they come. It would be similar to Sachin scoring his 50th Test 100 in SA in an innings defeat and people celebrating it as if India just won the world cup.

On one hand there's another 8-0 whitewash after couple of years when India play away if you keep Sachin (seniors) in the Test team and don't give youngsters a chance to develop themselves in that time because sachin wont last more than 2 years and you will have youngsters playing as newbies in foreign tours and on the other hand you've a chance of avoiding that 8-0 whitewash in foreign tours if you get in youngster in the test team now and give them some confidence and a look at the bowling of major teams at home. Remember youngsters cant play worse than what current crop has played in England and Australia.Ponka is not just talking about tendulkar but also about Dravid and Laxman in same breath. Get rid of all 3 now and develop the future or else get ready for another whitewash on foreign tours.

So what is the better way to accept a defeat ? - Cry out saying we lost or celebrate and cherish some fond memories we have had from a game we lost? Yes, it would have been sweeter had India won, but why do we relate individual records with the result of the game? Individual records and landmarks are not meant to be achieved only in team's winning cause. But then again, to each its own. Its upto you how you take it.

Yes I agree that time has come for Sachin to hang his boots (in a year probably) and give youngsters their share of chances especially on away tours, and I would also love to see him taking a break for a couple of games in this CB series and giving Manoj, Parthiv their chances. Its not a great sight to see a dominant master getting troubled on these Aussie tracks where he has ruled over the years. Not that I am writing him off, I know he is too good a player to leave out this tour without a stamp of authority. I am sure if we get to the finals, he will be the one who will win it for us.

Better way would be to plan for the future and ensure we never face the same situation again. After 0-8 it's clear the seniors aren't of much use and it's time to fall back on youngsters. If I have to lose I would prefer to do so with youngsters as at least there would be a promise of better times ahead. With Tendulkar what's the point in continuing as he most probably will play for the next 2 years at home and then retire leaving the team in the lurch just before the next overseas tour. As for landmarks not always achieved in victory, I agree with you. But to continue pursuit of a landmark even to the detriment of the team sure is a big no-no.

You can't have a team full of novices. You do need a bit of experience in the middle. This team has to go through a transition phase and when a team full of youngsters would start losing, then we would be the first one's to open threads like how we miss our seniors.

If this is the sort of transition I would simply fast-track youngsters as what could be worse than 0-8 and 5 innings defeats in those 8 losses.

Our famed batting line up was playing in this line up. The only positive to have come out is the emergence of Kohli. Before him, Raina was being backed for the #6 spot and his time was up and hence Kohli was tried. And he did struggle pretty badly. He must have been ably supported by the seniors. Imagine a situation where the youngster was struggling and there was no guidance. whom would be approach in such cases, Sehwag? I have always felt that hindsight gives you a better sight. And that's what we have been looking at.

But what sort of guidance can seniors provide when they themselves are failing along with the youngsters? IMO it will send a negative message to youngsters, i.e. it's ok to fail and still remain in the team. I think we need to do the same thing Aus did in mid 80s when they were bottom of the bareel. They identified a core group of youngsters and stuck with them under Border. There was only one senior in that team (Border) and he used to perform. We need to do the same and stickt with Gambhir and Sehwag as seniors. That should be it. I mean what sort of guidance can SRT provide that can't be done by Sehwag, Gambhir, Dhoni etc.? And if SRT still wants to impart wisdom to youngsters he can do so in domestic cricket and IPL. Nobody is stopping him from doing so but I am sorry to say he can't have an automatic spot in the team solely in the name of "guidance" or "transition".
ganeshran Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 I have always felt that hindsight gives you a better sight. And that's what we have been looking at. Pretty much sums it up.

It comes across as a serious post. 2. It comes across from someone who works at the modern day journalistic beacon of cricket. How did experience help in the 0-8 scoreline? What guidance did these 'seniors' impart to the youngsters over the 0-8 scoreline? And no, you might belong to this collective herd mentality of "We" but in the circumstance that we do lose 0-8 with the youngsters speaking for myself I won't be complaining or clamoring about bringing the "seniors" back.

If our selectors pick test squads on the basis of ODI accomplishments then no amount of "guidance" from the seniors is going to prepare them. I've been saying it for a long time - pick Pujara, Rahane, Kohli, Sharma and give them 3 full test series. The next time they'll tour abroad they'll score more than the 30 average that Tendulkar, Laxman, and Dravid give us these days with or without "guidance".
