Sachin=GOD Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 ESPN is the worst HD broadcaster ever. They have ads on bloody HD! Not even Neo Sports does ads on HD. why shouldn't they have ADs in HD?? How exactly are broadcasters supposed to earn money if they don't have ADs? Early on the HD channels in India didn't have ADs mainly to attract new customers but I don't think it would be viable for channels in the long run so sooner or later all HD channels will have ADs.
shinchan Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 I pray broadcasters don't pay up what BCCI are asking of them. We'll end up with a new and innovative ad to bug us during the broadcast u means those ipl type mid-over ads:fear:
Prakat Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 BCCI hikes up rates before Sachin announces retirement. :acute: smart poyz!

Subscribers pay a premium price, hence it may be right for them not to demand ads. The cost is quite high and therefore, may justify the demand.

saneindian Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Whoever gets these rights will be forced to show so many ads to recover his cost. The BCCI could have been a little less greedy and asked for a reasonable amount rather than these obscene numbers. With India having a lot of free time between May-Sept over the next 2-3 seasons (including some pink boxes in the FTP said to be left for series with Pakistan if possible), expect them to plan for some useless tri series to compensate the broadcasters.

I get your point but ads could be served to people who aren't charged premium. It's a well studied and successful model used for a lot of internet based firms too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freemium The normal TV ads are charged quite high for events like the WC. The move towards HD ads signifies more money into the broadcasters pockets. It's not like ESPN Star is cash hemorrhaged either. An event like CLT20 alone earns them huge profit. http://www.cricketcountry.com/cricket-articles/-ESPN-Star-Sports-to-earn-Rs-120-crore-profit-from-CLT20/5555

Malcolm Merlyn Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 i hope that one of the existing players get the rights.cant handle.one more new sports channel we already 8. Sent from my GT-I9103 using Tapatalk
riwi999 Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 This same topic was discussed about a year ago, if I remember right, by a panel including Sambit Bal (representing cricinfo and speaking for cricket fans), Rajeev Shukla (BCCI), Sanjay Manjrekar and a media planning person (I don't remember who). Everybody was blaming the other, nothing came out of it. I think it starts with the BCCI. If its asking price is high, the advertisers will naturally extract every second of advertising possible to get max mileage from their investment. This would be to the detriment of the cricket fan. I think the BCCI, as the custodian of the game in India, needs to keep its prices low (just enough for it to make some money to be a viable operation) and then demand from the advertisers that their advertising does not impinge on match-viewing satisfaction. The BCCI needs to be in charge - and act in the interest of the cricket fan. But maybe that's too much to expect from Rajeev Shukla, N. Srinivasan and the others.
Crookbond Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 but HD broadcast is also more expensive for the broadcasters as compared to normal broadcast' date=' is it not?[/quote'] Not exorbitant. However, one must note that the expensive part is covered up in the expensive advertisement prices on normal rate TV. Not just covered up but good enough to make humongous profits. I can't dig ESPNStar's balance sheets. I've no doubt they would be outrageous.

HD channels come at an extra cost. I certainly didn't pay to have the same type of ad garbage that I get on the regular channel. Since I'm incurring an extra cost for the channel, the least I expect is an ad-free experience. As for the revenue part, did you know, Star Cricket was supposed to be ad-free when it was launched during the World Cup? The bloody muftkhor sponsors blackmailed them into broadcasting ads. And its stuck since then
