^^ Pakistan se haar haar ke naak kata rakhi thi 70-80s me. :--D
India lost to Pakistan at home in '87, but besides that loss India used to win in India and Pakistan in Pakistan. India had a poor time in the ODI series as well in '87, but you've got to factor in that the late 80s side of Pakistan was one of the stronger teams even giving an an all time West Indies team a run for their money.

I am assuming you are suggesting test cricket here, as LOI was hardly played in 70s. In Test the only series we lost at home was in late 80s, around 88 I beleive, the last series of Gavaskar. Otherwise India won in India and Pakistan in Pakistan. Kapil Dev would make sure we won here, Imran Khan would ensure they won there. Thats it really. The results would show that. In LOI we had wood over Pakistan till 1986. Kapil Dev had famously told Miandad, "Why do you guys bother to turn up, you always lose to us anways". That was the last time we won in Sharjah for a long time. The devil lies in the details though, if you look at the fixtures and results you would see India's performance against Pakistan in early LOI was more of a dominance.

Tests evenly matched ,surprise for me that in LOIs its pretty good in early 80s. We really lost the plot in late 80s and then ****ed it in 90s. Though as you said will have to give them credit for that , they were far stronger team in that era.

Yeah we did have low times in the 70s and 80s - how is that equivalent to saying we were not a good team then? And even those low times were not lower than 0-8. Even against an all time great West Indies team' date= which would beat the current England and Australia teams 9 out of 10 times, India were never whitewashed.
I am not the one to say so. I just pitched in the other perspective viz. we did have low times. Similarly, we can't say that the current team is not a good team. I guess you will agree.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was Miandad six of Chetan Sharma of the last ball in the Australasia cup.

Thats the one. Miandad boasts that Kapil's comment lit the fire under his ****. Not sure if thats true or not. But if you look at it generally speaking India had a pretty good team till 1987 WC. Between 1987 and close to 1999 we became whipping boys. This era also conicides with best of SRT so you can slice that in many a different directions. I would say 70s,80s team were pretty good. Definitely more balanced that supposedly our golden era team. Golden era has a lot of strong points, but it has also benefitted immensly from lack of quality opposition.

Talking about isolated incidents doesn't give whole picture of decades. In 70's and 80's we might have beaten Eng and WI on away tours but we bowled out for a score of 42 as well. We were routed at home also many times. Overall, India was not considered among top teams of world cricket. It is only in 2000's that India was recognized as top dogs of world cricket. Numbers also suggest same; 70's - T 64 W 17 L 19 D/T- 28 80's - T 81 W 11 L 21 D/T - 49 (only SL had poorer record than us. Even NZ was better) http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;spanmax2=31+Dec+1989;spanmin2=01+Jan+1980;spanval2=span;template=results;type=team 2000's T- 103 W 40 L 27 D/T 36

We won a total of 4 overseas test matches in 20 years from 1980 to 1999. That is a Win loss ratio of 0.14 The last 8-0 might have been a very low point for our test team but post 2000 still is the best era in our cricket history

Yes, certainly. However, I would like to make a point here. Weren't in the 70s at least - a draw was as good as a win for us?

ople read too much into that six/match. India had a pretty decent side from 83-87 where they won the World Cup, Benson & Hedges Champions Cup in Aus and were the favorites to win the 87 WC. It was after 87 when the all-rounders (Madan Lal, Binny, Amarnath) went out of the game that India became a pretty average outfit in odis and it coincided with Pakis unearthing Wasim & Waqar. But even then the majority of Indian losses came at Sharjah where the games were a bit dodgy to say the least. In the WCs or away from the subcontinent, India still had a pretty decent record against Pakis.

In the WCs, we have "never" lost to Pakistan. I think it's their mental block.

we learn new things every day at ICF ... and todays lesson is that India played Pakis in WorldCup during the 80s .... :yay:
I don't see any such inference in that post. It talks about post 87 era versus Pakistan in WCs. At least, that's what I can infer.

Selectors' move to elevate Virat Kohli as vice-captain also affected the team. Apparently, Gautam Gambhir didn't take the selectors' move sportingly. "Gambhir was disappointed with the decision and following that announcement, the relationship between him and Kohli took a beating. Now, they don't even see eye-to-eye,
So Gambhir and Kohli were not good to each other while batting.

I was responding to the post which said India's record against Pakistan suffered post Miandad 6, Einstein  I was saying the reason was not the 6 but that our team weakened from what we had in mid 80s, and even in 90s we did pretty well against pakis, case in point WCs which happened post Miandad 6 in 90s when Pakis were supposedly so much better than India.
