Yes, and vitamin deficiency and hypervitaminosis are black magic? Why don't you just post the appropriate links/references. Until then, I will just speak from what I have read, experienced. Multi-vitamin won't do any good for someone having already balanced diet, and leading normal active life. But, when you go for some extreme diets e.g. it is likely that one can be missing some vitamins (or having overdoes of some) - or when you are working-out heavier than normal beings - then also you need to supplement with additional nutrients, vitamins and minerals. and not to mention the anti-oxidant effects of Vitamin C and E. I have no problems updating my knowledge base, but not based on some random one-liner by some random person.

But as a letter following up the call explained, not only was the answer "no," but vitamin E apparently increased the chance of prostate cancer, if very slightly, and selenium seemed to raise the risk of diabetes. http://health.usnews.com/health-news/diet-fitness/diet/articles/2008/12/09/vitamins-and-supplements-do-they-work This week, researchers reported the disappointing results from a large clinical trial of almost 15,000 male doctors taking vitamins E and C for a decade. The study showed no meaningful effect on cancer rates. Another recent study found no benefit of vitamins E and C for heart disease. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/20/news-keeps-getting-worse-for-vitamins/ Long-term multivitamin use has no impact on the risk of common cancers, cardiovascular disease or overall mortality in postmenopausal women, a new study finds. The message is simple and echoes the advice of most researchers who have looked into the effects of diet: Eat real food. Several other studies have shown vitamin supplements to be next to worthless and in some cases harmful. http://www.livescience.com/3302-study-suggests-multivitamins-work.html
anotherhawkeye Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 ^ dude, you have few studies that state that vitamins cant prevent or cure cancer or heart disease. But that's not the point being discussed, is it? Who claimed in this thread that vitamins cure cancer? And your conclusion (that you copied from the linked article): eat real food. I can ask the same question: which food is proven to cure cancer? The point that was made earlier is that multivitamins "supplement" real food for those whose diet is restricted. I still haven't seen anything from you or any worthwhile medical journal that casts doubt. Now, I have read that multivitamin is not a sufficient source of all vitamins at recommended levels and that real food is always better. But that's another topic because there is no such thing as real food any more.

Come to Kerala, I can show you people eating Beef from Morning 7 am :--D. In fact, when I was a kid,I use to wonder why India was regarded as vegetarian nation when I could hardly find any vegetarian around me apart from Brahmins. Also Beef is widely available in Goa, North-east and areas populated by Muslims and Christians. Regarding hardcore, I have no inhibitions and religious compulsions(thanks to being an atheist :) ) in eating habits. Hence, can eat Snake,Horse and Whale if they are available and tasty :P

Even Brahmins eat non veg back in Kerala. I've got a couple of friends who eat non veg without their parents knowing about it. Beef in Kerala is frigging awesome. And when someone visits Kerala next time, avoid eating Beef fry from a 5* restaurant rather go for the street food..that's where the taste lies (Its clean aswell)..

Ha ha, you are a funny guy. As I said in my previous post, it's a topic for another day. I'm not arguing that multivitamin > food. I was merely expressing my opinion that your links didn't prove that multivitamin "are batshit useless". They have have their place in one's well being, which was akshayxyz's point. About your claim that some food can prevent cancer. No food is guaranteed to prevent cancer -- they just reduce the likelihood. If you think otherwise, come up with a link from a reputed medical journal. Anyway, If anyone asks for my advice, my advice would be to eat as much fruit and vegetables as possible. If they think can't eat as much fresh fruits and raw vegetables as they would like because life gets in the way, I would ask them to consider multivitamin and other specific vitamins like vitamin D. :icflove:
