He'll again support Kangress after 2014 too in the name of "secularism"... MMS health will make him "unable" to be PM candidate in 2014 elections... Raul will definitely step in then...

asterix Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 Did pending DA cases force Mulayam, Mayawati to support Pranab? Rewind to 2008. Mulayam Singh Yadav was in distress. Arch-rival Mayawati was on a new political high. BSP had steam-rolled Samajwadi Party in the 2007 assembly polls, and she had snatched the CM's chair from him. Mulayam's distress was doubled by the Supreme Court's March 1, 2007, order directing the CBI to conduct preliminary investigations into alleged disproportionate assets amassed by him and his kin, including son Akhilesh Singh Yadav. Surprisingly, the court had also asked the CBI to submit its findings of the preliminary probe to the Centre for further action, thus, handing over the political maneuvering key to the Congress-led UPA government. Mayawati's political ascendancy needed to be checked and the opportunity came with the CBI registering FIR in an alleged disproportionate assets case against her, despite the UP Governor refusing to grant sanction for her prosecution in the Taj Heritage Corridor scam. The refusal was based on an elaborate 125-page opinion given by an additional solicitor general of the Union government. In May, 2008, Mayawati moved the Supreme Court seeking quashing of the FIR. Mulayam and kin also moved the court seeking review of the judgment directing CBI probe against them. The legal moves provided the opportunity to the government to politically extract its pound of flesh from both SP, which had 39 MPs in Lok Sabha, and BSP. The opportunity came when Left Front withdrew support from the UPA-1 over the Indo-US nuclear treaty forcing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to seek trust vote. The trust would have been in the deficit if Mulayam Singh Yadav had not come to the UPA's rescue allowing it to win the trust vote on July 22, 2008, by a slender margin of 275-256. BSP voted against the government during the trust vote. Mulayam and his kin reaped immediate relief. The CBI sought to withdraw its application from the Supreme Court through which it had said that there was enough proof to nail the Yadavs in the disproportionate assets case. Surprisingly, the CBI found that it had committed simple accounting mistakes to have arrived at the "wrong" conclusion that the Yadavs had amassed disproportionate assets. The SC has kept the judgment reserved for more than three years. For Mayawati, it was just the reverse. The CBI told the Supreme Court through affidavits that it had found ample evidence against her and was ready to charge sheet her in the DA case while rejecting her argument that the case was an offshoot of the Taj Heritage Corridor case, in which she had been given a clean chit. Cut to the present Mayawati fought her case calling the registration of FIR against her a political vendetta. After affidavits by the CBI and counter-affidavits by her, the Supreme Court has in May, 2012, reserved verdict on her petition. In four years, Mulayam is politically in a much happier situation having bailed out the UPA twice. First, he pitched support for UPA during the political crisis sparked by Indo-US nuclear deal. Now, when UPA's key ally Trinamool Congress disagreed with UPA on Pranab Mukherjee as the candidate for President's post, he sprang a surprise by breaking away from talks with Mamata Banerjee to emerge on UPA's side. If Mulayam commanded 39 SP MPs in Lok Sabha in 2008, his party's diminished strength at 21 MPs in Lok Sabha still remains significant. Having succeeded in weaning away Mulayam from Mamata to scotch a possible politically spurious alliance against UPA, the Congress desired support of 22 BSP MPs to decisively outflank Trinamool leader's assertive political calculations surging upwards daily because of its significant contribution to the UPA's Lok Sabha kitty, 19 MPs which is highest among its allies. Mayawati appears to be a quick learner. She emulated her arch-rival's skills of survival in a weird coalition political scenario, where it is so very essential to be on the right side of the law enforcing agencies. She knew from Jagan Mohan Reddy's fate that remaining politically powerful in a state without the blessings of the Centre, CBI included, was to be in the perennial political readiness — to expect the unexpected. This could well be one of the reasons for her support to UPA's official candidate for President's post. Because, just a month ago, she had accused the Centre of indulging in "political vendetta and witch-hunt" during the final arguments on her petition requesting the Supreme Court to quash the FIR in DA case. But BJP didn't do their homework properly again and were eternally waiting for UPA to take a decision. UPA is famous for delaying things so that others don't have time to react. Remember that new year eve midnight session in which VP Ansari had to save UPA blushes at the stroke of midnight...

Also, seeing Dr. Kalam's stature, it wouldn't befit him to contest only to lose the election.
